The Assistant Director, Advising and Outreach oversees student services for a large, complex Education Abroad (EA) office serving approximately 2,000 students participating in study abroad programs each year. The Assistant Director trains and mentors regional study abroad advisors, develops and communicates study abroad policies in consultation with the EA director, and reviews student appeals. The Assistant Director for Advising and Outreach ensures professional and productive communication between EA and individual UMD schools and departments in order to seamlessly integrate study abroad with UMD academic programs. He/she coordinates with each advisor to inform campus advisors about study abroad issues and to ensure timely, comprehensive responses to requests for information, input, and guidance regarding overseas education. The Assistant Director bears primary responsibility for EA outreach and promotional activities, planning and overseeing preparations for two study abroad fairs, coordinating extensive on-campus activities, and drafting announcements and promotional materials. The Assistant Director for Advising and Outreach represents Education Abroad within the academic advising community both at formal meetings and in daily communication with colleagues. The Assistant Director works with the EA director to develop and implement comprehensive policies governing the application process, student selection, health information disclosures, pre-departure orientations, and student conduct. He/she responds to emergencies both during and after regular hours if the Director and Associate Director are not available. The Assistant Director supervises the division?s regional advisors and advises approximately 100-150 students per year.
