Mitt Romney's remarks draw ire, but President Obama still faces crisis

Mitt Romney faced further fallout after his sharp criticism of President Obama over the Libyan attacks yesterday as he tried to backpedal from his harsh remarks, while pundits said Obama could still face a crisis if unrest continues.

?Romney softened his stance, but the media narrative is that he was politicizing an unfortunate incident in a way that others before him, such as Ronald Reagan, refused to do,? said Leonard Steinhorn, a political science professor at American University, who added that Obama?s not out of hot water yet either.

The Obama administration yesterday had to walk back the president?s own apparent gaffe that Egypt is not an ?ally,? while some critics began raising questions about how an apparent terrorist attack was not detected by U.S. security agencies.

?What the president doesn?t want to have happen is to make it seem like the wheels are coming off, like there?s rampant instability under his watch,? Steinhorn said.

Turmoil spread to Yemen yesterday as hundreds stormed the U.S. embassy in protest over a contentious movie that disrespects the Prophet Muhammad. The protests come in the same week that rioters killed a U.S. ambassador and three staffers in Libya, and protests continued to rock Egypt.

Yesterday, Romney made only a brief reference to the attacks, saying, ?The world needs American leadership, the Middle East needs American leadership.?

GOP strategist Chip Saltsman said: ?There would be some people who would say Mitt Romney has not had a good day or two, now he?s got to get past this and get back to talking about the economy.?
