Madoff's brother?pleads guilty to fraud charges

By msnbc.com staff, WNBC, and news wires

UPDATED 12:15 p.m. ET: Peter Madoff, the?brother of convicted scammer Bernie Madoff, pleaded guilty Friday to doctoring records to hide?the?Ponzi scheme orchestrated by his older sibling that swindled thousands of people out of billions of dollars and stunned the world?in?the throes of the financial crisis.

"I am deeply ashamed of my actions," he told a hearing in downtown Manhattan federal court on Friday morning, several hours after he was taken into custody by FBI agents at his lawyer's office in midtown Manhattan.

"I want to apologize to anyone who was harmed and my family. I'm here to take responsibility for my actions," Peter Madof

Peter Madoff, 66,?had been?arrested earlier?Friday at his lawyer's office in?midtown Manhattan and had been expected to enter the guilty plea for which he's expected to get 10 years in prison. He?entered the plea?in the same courthouse where his brother, 74, was convicted and sentenced in March 2009 to 150 years in prison for the largest Ponzi scheme ever.

"Peter Madoff enabled the largest fraud in human history. He will now be jailed well into old age, and he will forfeit virtually every penny he has. We are not yet finished calling to account everyone responsible for the epic fraud of Bernard Madoff and the epic pain of his many victims," said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in a statement.

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday revealed in a letter that Peter Madoff had been criminally charged with participating in his brother's fraud. He and his brother are the only?Madoff family members to have been arrested and charged in the Ponzi scheme.

The letter, filed in federal court in Manhattan, said Peter Madoff would?plead guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and falsifying records as well as other charges. He agreed not to seek a sentence other than 10 years in prison, the letter said.

Peter Madoff also agreed to forfeit about $143.1 billion, including all real and personal property, the letter said. The amount is symbolic, being more than twice the estimated size of the fraud.

John Wing, a lawyer for Peter Madoff, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Peter Madoff was chief compliance officer at Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC when his brother was arrested on December 11, 2008.

Prosecutors have not said whether criminal cases are also being prepared against Bernard Madoff's son, Andrew, who was co-director of trading, or his niece, Shana, who was a compliance officer at the firm.

In May, Irving Picard, the trustee seeking money for victims of the Ponzi scheme, named members of Madoff's family in an expanded $255.3 million lawsuit, claiming they should have detected Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme at the firm that operated "as if it were their family piggy bank."

Besides Madoff's brother Peter, Picard sued Andrew Madoff, who was co-director of trading; the estate of son Mark, co-director of trading who committed suicide in December 2010; and Shana Madoff.

In the lawsuit, Picard described Peter Madoff as a savvy investor who once served as vice-chairman of the board of governors of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

Picard is seeking $90.4 million from Peter, $81.3 million from Mark Madoff's estate, $73.8 million from Andrew and $15.3 million from Shana.

Lawyers for Andrew and Shana Madoff did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Between 1993 and 2008, Peter Madoff was paid over $36 million in salary and bonuses, Picard said, and the firm funded his lavish lifestyle, including $140,000 for a Ferrari in 1995 and a home on Manhattan's upscale Park Avenue.

Peter Madoff is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and mail fraud as well as making false statements about the firm's compliance program and investment advisory business.

He is also charged with falsifying records.

About a dozen people have now been implicated in criminal wrongdoing related to the Madoff firm.

Five have pleaded not guilty: Annette Bongiorno, Daniel Bonventre, Joann Crupi, Jerome O'Hara and George Perez.

Frank DiPascali, the former chief financial officer often called Bernard Madoff's right-hand man, pleaded guilty in August 2009 and has been praised by prosecutors for his cooperation. He has yet to be sentenced.

Picard has estimated customers of the Madoff firm lost about $20 billion. On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling on the trustee's methods for calculating losses. That decision could help Picard repay customers faster.?

bradford - Graham Nash Works | Arts & Entertainment | Atlantic City ...

Neil Young by Graham Nash

Photo by Copyright Graham Nash 2012

Graham Nash has been playing with Crosby, Stills and Nash since 1968. Although he and his at-the-time new band mates ? Crosby, a former member of the Byrds; Stills of Buffalo Springfield, and Nash of the Hollies ? would become one of the biggest radio and concert sensations of the late 1960s and 1970s through today, the trio ? which would also work with Neil Young for many projects ? wasn?t quite ready for its first concert:?

The Atlantic City Pop Festival, held at the Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing, just before Woodstock in August 1969.?

?We didn?t play it,? says Nash, on a tour stop with CSN in Providence, Rhode Island. (The band is on the road through October and returns to the Borgata in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 30.)?

Although CSN was to debut live at the A.C. Pop Fest, with its name listed on the festival?s official posters and T-shirts, etc., Nash doesn?t quite remember the circumstances. ?

?I?m not sure to be honest,? he says. ?I?ve been asked this question twice within the last month. ? I believe that we needed more practice. Don?t forget Woodstock was only the second gig we ever played together live. ?

?I think we might have needed more rehearsal or something. Something was going on and we didn?t play that Atlantic City [date, but] there were people who swore they saw us there!??

Aside from singing and playing on such classic tunes as ?Almost Cut My Hair,? ?Teach Your Children,? ?Our House? and ?Chicago,? Nash has been interested in art and photography for decades. ?

Although he has had exhibits of his photography in the past, his paintings ? mainly acrylics ? are being unveiled for the first time beginning this Thursday (June 28) in Stone Harbor.?

While CSN plays the Borgata, Nash?s exhibit ?The Art of Graham Nash? will be on display at Ocean Galleries (9618 Third Ave., Stone Harbor) through Sept. 30. ?

However, on July 1, Nash will be at the gallery in person for a reception between 7-10pm where he will sign purchased art.?

?This exhibit has never been seen before,? says Nash. ?These paintings. I?ve been working on this [exhibit] for about a year and a half now.?

?This whole experience is fresh. It was amazing to me that when the gallery owners came out to my house in Los Angeles and saw my work it was their response that got me excited because, I mean, they?re supposed to know what they?re doing ? they?ve had an art gallery for a couple decades now and they?re this excited! It was shocking to me.? ?

So Nash decided to share his intriguing imagery with the world.?

?Why not let other people see them?? Nash says. ?You know? It?s brand new to me and it?s going to be exciting.??

Exciting for southern New Jersey folks as well, as the Ocean Galleries exhibit is the world premiere of Nash?s paintings of images and people such as Neil Young. ?

Nash says he is already working on another exhibit of different works.?

?I?ve done another exhibit of very serious work that I?ve been doing,? says Nash. ?

?Almost brutal images of things that disturb me. ... It?s hard to say what they are. They are a combination of painting and photographs and images that I made collages of ? interesting work. And there will only be seven pieces in the entire exhibit. Six of them will be four-feet-square and one image will be four-feet-high by 12-feet long.??

Aside from the images that will be on display at Ocean Galleries this summer, Nash?s Web site shows more than 40 photographs the 70-year-old multi-faceted artist has taken over the years.?

?I?ve been a photographer longer than I?ve been a musician,? says Nash. ?The first portrait that I ever took where I thought I had something was of my mother when I was 11.??

On the Web site, there is a photo of Bob Dylan playing live at Madison Garden for the George Harrison-organized Concert for Bangladesh. ?

?Oh, yes I was there. That?s Leon Russell there behind him. I was there to purely watch George pull off a piece of wonderfulness. It was a great, great concert.??

So, has Nash shown any of his subjects his paintings of them??

?No, neither David [Crosby] or Stephen [Stills] Neil [Young] or Joni [Mitchell] have seen any of these. It?s kind of wild; it would be interesting to hear their reaction.? The Neil Young image was painted from a photograph Nash took of the musician ?years ago.??

RELATED: INTERVIEW WITH STEPHEN STILLS ('IT'S DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN')

?I really like it and I blew it up larger on canvas and painted it. There are several in there because not only are they all different colors and different interpretations, but I wrote a line from a Neil song into every painting.??

One of the Neil Young images is called ?Neil Young ? Hurricane,? which is a line from his song, ?Like a Hurricane.? There is also Neil Young ? Old Man, with, along his shoulder line, I?ve written a line from his song ?Old Man.? Just pushing it all forward.?

Like fellow musician Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, who also has a southern New Jersey art exhibit (at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City through July, see images here), Nash prefers acrylic paint to oils. ?

?Right now, I?m loving acrylic,? says Nash. ?I don?t do [work] in oil. I?m too impatient. It takes too long to dry. It takes days to dry. It drives me crazy.??

Do It Yourself ? Five Simple Yet Effective Internet Marketing Tips for ...

Blog MarketingGone are the days of yellow pages or telephone directory searches when someone was trying to find a local attorney or notary public. These days, people simply ?Google? when looking for an attorney and if you haven?t got your website up and running, you might be missing out on a large chunk of potential customers. Creating a strong online presence is easy and affordable. All you have to do is know the basics of creating a website, search engine optimization, and some smart use of social media! The level of success will depend on the time and efforts you can put into the process. The more you work on the marketing side of your website, the better your chances of growing and getting some leads from the Internet.

Following are the five internet marketing tips for you to grow your business online.

Get a Website:

There are many platforms that offer you the facility of setting up a website free of cost (mainly used for blogging). However, such websites cannot be customized and cannot be owned. To set up a professional website on your own domain and host, you can use a content management system like WordPress.com, or you can hire a freelance web developer from the portals like odesk.com or elance.com, to get a fully customized website at dirt cheap prices.

Once you?ve got your own domain and website ready, you will have to search for a hosting service. Most popular ones are Hostgator and GoDaddy. They have got several pricing packages based on monthly or yearly usage. You might need to have some web savvy person to guide you with the initial setup but once the website is up, you don?t need to do anything to keep it going.

Basic SE Optimization:

SEO or search engine optimization is the process of getting your website indexed and making it searchable on search engines. A customer will enter a specific search term relative to your business (e.g. divorce attorney in California, real estate attorney in Chicago, find notary public in Virginia, etc). Your website needs to appear on the results when someone searches with one of those keywords. Sounds easy? Not at all ? Competition is fierce and on a single keyword, there are millions of results. A fully optimized website aims to trespass these millions of websites to stand on the top 10 results, but because you will be competing for localized searches, that shouldn?t be as hard as competing for a generic term.

Your website?s main keywords, content strategy, advertisements, traffic, exposure, popularity and many other factors can affect your Google rankings. Without basic SEO done, your website will hardly serve any purpose.

Make the Most of Social Media

SEO is not enough to give your business the exposure it needs, because that is merely for search engines. For real people, real connections and real brand building, you will need to make the most of social media. The more traffic you get from social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, the better your chances of getting new clients for your practice.

More than 845 billion (and counting) users are on Facebook and this is a huge market that you can target by launching an active Facebook page describing your legal services and forte. Similarly, Twitter and LinkedIn are great platforms for professional networking.

Start a Blog on your Website

A blog is essential when you are looking to create some credibility as a professional. In fact, for millions of businesses, an active blog is what really generates leads and customers. The better you write or topics related to laws and regulations, the more your chances of making it big in the online world. Make sure you focus and write more for general public (i.e. your target audience) instead of delving deeper into legal issues and using jargon that a common reader will find a tad difficult to understand.

Think of the topics or advice that your target users will be looking for, and write on them using your experience and legal knowledge. Share your blog posts onto social bookmarking sites, initiate guest posts at relevant blogs to get more exposure (e.g. family and relationship blogs or real estate blogs if you are a real estate attorney).

Create PPC Campaigns

Pay per click or PPC is an advertising form, which is similar to real time advertising on print media. PPC is all about getting your ads across search engines and paying for every click or visitor to your website. This may appear as a costly option for many, however, PPC campaigns are sometimes ideal for small business owners or professionals who want to get the word out. The campaigns should be well structured according to states or types of cases that you are looking for.

You might need the help of a seasoned expert to generate the right words or ads for better ROI. You can also use Facebook Ads for the same purpose and see which one yields better result for your business.

Creating a strong online presence for lawyers and attorneys will require persistent work and a dedicated schedule. If you don?t have the time to for all of these mediums, you should go ahead and hire a professional to do the job, because Internet is something you cannot afford to overlook.

(AP) ? The younger brother and business partner of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff pleaded guilty Friday to charges he doctored documents for years, but he insisted he knew nothing about his brother's historic Ponzi scheme and was "in total shock" when he found out about it.

An emotional Peter Madoff, 66, entered the plea in a deal that permits him to remain free on $5 million bail pending his Oct. 4 sentencing. He agreed not to contest a 10-year prison sentence and, several hours later, emerged from the courthouse into a rush of cameras and a car that awaited him.

"My family was torn apart as a result of my brother's atrocious conduct," he said. "I was reviled by strangers as well as friends who assumed that I knew about the Ponzi scheme."

The plea to charges of conspiracy and falsifying records came in the Manhattan courthouse where Bernard Madoff was led away in handcuffs in 2009 to serve a 150-year sentence. Federal prosecutors said the investigation was ongoing.

Peter Madoff told the judge he was "deeply ashamed and terribly sorry" but that he didn't know about the scam until his brother revealed it in December 2008.

"I was in total shock," he said, adding he had persuaded his wife, daughter, granddaughter and sister to invest millions of dollars that they lost in the fraud. "My world was destroyed. I lost everything I worked for."

Prosecutors portrayed the younger Madoff as a criminally incompetent chief compliance officer who filed fabricated compliance reports for more than a decade and purposefully deceived the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"He even signed many weeks of compliance reports in one sitting, intentionally changing pens and ink colors to disguise the fact that he had done them at once," Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa A. Baroni told U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain.

Madoff became choked up near the end of his statement after he described how he and his brother decided which favored friends, clients and family members should receive the $300 million that remained in the investment company's accounts.

Only weeks before, the clients had been told their roughly $20 billion investment had grown to more than $65 billion.

He said he was "shocked and devastated" by his brother's admission that it was all a fraud, "but nevertheless I did as my brother had said, as I had consistently done for decades. I knew that the conduct was wrong and I am deeply ashamed." The checks never went out.

The plea was consistent with Bernard Madoff's own claims that his brother and two sons were in the dark about his misdeeds.

The FBI nevertheless had been suspicious from the start about the role of Peter Madoff, who had worked side by side with his scheming brother for more than 40 years.

FBI Assistant Director Janice K. Fedarcyk said Peter Madoff played an "essential enabling role" in the scam by certifying fabricated investment results.

"The Madoff investment empire, built on a foundation of deceit, was a house of cards that grew to skyscraper proportions," she said. "As Peter Madoff has admitted today, he was one of the chief architects."

Peter Madoff was released on $5 million bail, secured by $1 million in cash or property, pending sentencing. Prosecutors said Peter Madoff agreed to surrender all his assets.

"Peter Madoff enabled the largest fraud in human history. He will now be jailed well into old age, and he will forfeit virtually every penny he has," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said. "We are not yet finished calling to account everyone responsible for the epic fraud of Bernard Madoff and the epic pain of his many victims."

Peter Madoff said he joined his brother's firm after graduating from Fordham Law School in 1970. He was credited with creating a computer trading system for the firm in the late 1970s and early 1980s that was considered groundbreaking at the time.

"I loved my job," he said, adding that his respect and admiration for his brother only grew in subsequent decades as Bernard Madoff became important on Wall Street, eventually becoming chairman of Nasdaq. Still, he added, Bernard Madoff "made clear to me I would never be a partner in his business," even as he showered him with tens of millions of dollars.

A complaint filed in bankruptcy court alleged that the Madoff investment business had transferred more than $77 million to Peter Madoff.

Peter Madoff admitted Friday that he tried to hide millions of dollars from the Internal Revenue Service.

Baroni said he had engaged in "an enormous tax fraud conspiracy," enabling tens of millions of dollars to be transferred among members of the Madoff family to dodge millions of dollars in taxes, and he arranged for his wife to take a no-show job at the investment firm.

As part of a forfeiture agreement, Madoff's wife, Marion, and daughter Shana must forfeit nearly all of their assets. The government said those assets and assets that will be forfeited by other family members include several homes, a Ferrari and more than $10 million in cash and securities. It said his wife will be left with $771,733.

Though Madoff had been the firm's chief compliance officer for nearly four decades, the government marked his start in the conspiracy as 1996. It said he created false and misleading compliance documents and false reports for the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The lies worsened in severity after August 2006, when the business was registered with the SEC as an investment adviser, requiring annual filings to guide the SEC's examination programs. Prosecutors said Madoff made "numerous false statements" to create the false appearance that the business represented a small number of highly sophisticated clients.

Baroni said the Madoffs once claimed the investment firm had 23 client accounts when it actually had more than 4,000.

The government said the business reported to the SEC in 2008 that it had $17.1 billion under management when it was reporting to investors that it had more than $65 billion.

Peter Madoff said that he withdrew $200,000 from the investment business's accounts even after learning about the fraud so that he could make annual donations to charities.

His plea differed from his brother's appearance three years ago, when numerous investors spoke of their pain after losing their life savings.

On two occasions Friday, Swain asked if any investors wished to speak. None stepped forward.

Since the fraud was revealed, a court-appointed trustee has reached agreements to recover approximately $9.1 billion and has distributed more than $1.1 billion to Madoff's victims.

Apple's Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, Bob Mansfield, is retiring

Apple has just issued a press release stating that Bob Mansfield, the company's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is retiring. Readers will probably recognize Mansfield from the videos Apple releases for new products, such as the new iPad and the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

Mansfield has been with Apple since 1999, and during his time as Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, he has overseen virtually every successful hardware launch at the company, including the MacBook Air, the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Announcing Mansfield's departure, Tim Cook said, "Bob has been an instrumental part of our executive team, leading the hardware engineering organization and overseeing the team that has delivered dozens of breakthrough products over the years. We are very sad to have him leave and hope he enjoys every day of his retirement."

Mansfield's role will be taken over by Dan Riccio. Riccio has been with Apple since 1998 and was previously its Vice President of Product Design.

As EU meets, euro hangs in the balance

A poster depicting euro notes is seen through a broken window in a money transfer shop in Athens, Greece. European leaders meet Thursday to try prevent the shattering of their common currency.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Here in the heart of the bureaucracy overseeing the eurozone, officials publicly concede the future of the common currency is at a crossroads.

Privately, some are acknowledging that the plan to bind Europe even closer together may be nearing the end of the road.

On Thursday, European Union leaders will gather for two days in another last-ditch effort to head off Greece's departure from the monetary union, an outcome all sides insist would spell?economic?and?financial?chaos?for Greece, threaten the rest of the eurozone and perhaps pressure the rest of the global economy.

But any hoped-for resolution of the crisis will have to wait. Greece's newly-elected prime minister, Antonis Samaras, has been sidelined from the meeting for health reasons. EU officials have delayed an audit of Greece's progress on economic reforms that must be completed before the next installment of financial aid is transferred to Athens.

The crisis entered a new, more worrisome chapter Monday following Spain's formal request for?rescue loans to backstop banks laden with bad debts due to a housing collapse. Some market economists believe the rescue appeal could represent the early stages of a wider request for a full bailout for the Spanish government, which saw its borrowing costs soar above 7 percent early last week.

The cost of such a Spanish rescue would be an order of magnitude bigger than the Greek bailout and raise the prospect that Italy, Europe's third largest economy, could soon follow suit, stretching the monetary union to the breaking point.

The European experiment may have been doomed from the start.?The massive debt burden now crushing southern economies followed the creation of a common currency that allowed them to borrow cheaply with no central European government to control taxation and spending.

Now, after two years of unsuccessful efforts to convince 17 sovereign nations to cede control of their budgets to Eurocrats in a distant capital, the financial markets are revoking that cheap credit line. Euro zone officials here insist they can still create the political union that will solve the problem ?- a task roughly equivalent to laying a foundation under a house that?s already been built and occupied.

?There is an undermining of trust among the main players in the process of European integration that is very difficult to mend,? one senior adviser at the European Commission told a group of American reporters in?a background briefing last week. ?There is a sense of an unease spreading. And there is a risk as everyone is searching for scapegoats. The economies are not improving."

The immediate concern centers on the latest round of brinksmanship over tough austerity measures imposed on Greece in return for continued financial help from the rest of the euro zone.

More than two years and 20 summit meetings after first grappling with the unfolding economic crisis, the latest standoff between Greece and the rest of Europe is shaping up as a last-ditch effort.

"We are doing everything to give the euroa future,? German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters after a meeting with other leaders in Rome Friday. "We are fighting for the euro."

Deepening divide
But with discord among Europe's leaders deepening, time may have finally run out.

The latest crisis has widened already-deep divisions. Officials from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund ?- the so-called troika ?- were to have reviewed Athens? progress this week on a list of bailout conditions before EU ministers assemble here for the summit to decide whether to write the Greeks another check. That review has been postponed indefinitely.

The newly-elected Greek government, which will burn through its latest bailout check in a matter of weeks, is widely regarded as too fragile to endure, let alone uphold the harsh measures that have driven the Greek economy to the brink of collapse.

With unemployment soaring and their economy in a deep depression, Greek officials said Saturday they will seek to repeal some taxes, halt layoffs and extend by two years the deadlines for tough austerity measures imposed under its international bailout agreement.

?In those two days in Brussels, we will carry out a major battle for revision of the loan and negotiate a framework that will boost recovery and the fight against unemployment,? said Evangelos Venizelos, head of the socialist PASOK party.

German officials are in no mood to let Greece off the hook. Merkel has said there can be no "rebates" on bailout terms for Greece. Finance Minister Wolfgang?Sch?uble has insisted that Athens must live up to the promises made when it agreed to accept the eurozone?s financial lifeline.

"(Samaras must) enact the program agreed upon quickly and without further delay instead of asking how much more others can do for Greece," Sch?uble told Reuters Sunday.

Tensions rising
The rising tensions among Europe?s leaders are also spreading among voters from Berlin to Brussels to Athens.

Having so far dodged the recession sweeping across the continent, Germans have been ?crisis winners,? according to economist Friedrich Heinemann at the Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim. As capital has fled debt-ravaged southern Europe to the safe haven of Frankfurt, falling interest rates have sparked a building and housing boom, kept a lid on inflation and helped boost German wages for the first time in over a decade.

Germany has become the de facto backstop for the faltering economies. It has contributed the bulk of the 890 billion euros ($1.1 trillion) in loan guarantees and bailout funds for Ireland, Portugal, Greece and now Spain -- the latter by far the largest economy to date to ask for help.

But Germany?s export-reliant economy, which depends heavily on continued strong demand from its troubled southern neighbors, is now slowing.

For their part, German voters are growing weary of their role?as financial backstop and are losing patience with bailouts that appear to have no end in sight.

?We are a European community and we belong to each other," said Reinhard Schniel, a project coordinator at the?Institute of Physics and Technology in Braunschweig. "We depend on others economically and in many other senses -- you can?t abandon your partners, your family. But we don?t see the political and economic mechanisms to make these countries change.?

Germans are deeply ambivalent about their new role. Memories are still fresh of the two world wars that resulted from the ambitions of past German leaders. But as Europe?s largest benefactor, Germans aren't eager to cede decisions to Brussels.

?Itsbasically the same kind of issue as back in the good old Boston Tea Party days -- ?No taxation without representation,?? said Timo Klein, an economist with IHS Global based in Frankfurt.?

For their part, Greek voters have little patience with what they see as Berlin?s relentless scolding over a crisis that was many years in the making and has helped boost the standard of living for the average German worker.

Mary Linos, anGreek IT student studying in Brussels, saw Germany defeat Greece last Friday in the?Euro 2012 soccer match. Linos, wrapped in the blue and white stripes?of Greece's flag, watched the game?with her friends at the Ethnic Caf?, just off the city's Grand Place.

?It?s not just the money,? she said, as the crowd booed when the big screen flashed a shot of Merkel sitting in the stands. ?We need help with experts to fix the problems. Germany has seen this happening for years now and has done nothing. Germany has also made a lot of money from Greece?s problems.?

Under construction
Europe?s fledgling central government -- still under construction after 22 years -? has been unwilling or unable to impose solutions.

In Brussels, a sprawling cluster of gleaming new buildings is dotted with construction sites that bristle with cranes still busy expanding the office space needed for more bureaucrats, lobbyists and journalists. They are trying to create a political culture here familiar to any American living within the Washington Beltway. But much like the vast Brussels headquarters complex, the architects of the grand vision to unify a continent of more than two dozen cultures, languages and sovereignties embarked on the plan with long time horizon. Europe's weaker economies can't wait that long.

Just as the American political system has lost its capacity to find compromise, the European experiment with the euro is faltering after repeated efforts to forge consensus. Despite repeated calls for tighter political union, the eurozone remains a loose collection of?states with a history of conflict that stretches back centuries.

Even as some here blame Athens for dragging its feet, for example, the European Commission itself continues to resist implementing a long list of reforms.

Member states still make their own tax and spending policies, borrowing to make up shortfalls without regard for the wider financial impact on the eurozone. Labor laws and social programs are set for each country by individual governments, producing economic imbalances that are exerting mounting pressure on the currency binding the group together.

Unlike their U.S. counterparts, European bank regulators have no authority to shut banks that are bleeding money, creating the risk that bailouts of so-called ?zombie? banks are simply throwing good money after bad.

The obstacles to these reforms date at least to the formation of the monetary union. Some are much more deeply-rooted. The creation of a common political system has been heavily impeded by the nationalism reflected in the distinct cultures and languages of European states.

As finance ministers hastily assembled to consider the latest backstop for Greece last week, for example, the top item on the agenda was a recent poll showing that the number of Europeans who know a?language other than their own has dropped slightly in a decade, from 56 percent?to 54 percent. The most common second language is English, although England is not a member of the monetary union.

EC officials acknowledge the scope and depth of what is being demanded of Athens.

?The changes we're expecting overnight are changes that are usually made over a generation,? said Ioana Diaconescu, an EC economic analyst.?

Parents Of Sophie Roberts, Toddler With Liver Cancer, Aim To ...

Two-year-old Sophie Roberts has been battling a rare form of liver cancer for about half of her life. Out of treatment options in the United Kingdom, her parents are now on a mission to raise nearly $360,000 for a potentially life-saving surgery in the United States.

Last year, Sophie was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a form of liver cancer that is usually caught before a patient turns 2 years old, according to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The incidence rate is about 0.9 in 1 million.

Unfortunately, by the time doctors found Sophie's tumor, the cancer had spread to the young girl's lungs. Months after chemotherapy, Sophie underwent surgery to remove the tumor, which resulted in the loss of 1/4 of her liver, according to the website, Sophie Roberts' Story.

Soon after recovery and more chemotherapy to treat several lung metastases, Sophie's parents, Andrew and Ruth, learned the cancer had returned and that surgery was likely the only treatment option.

But two medical teams in the United Kingdom told the couple they would not perform the operation, believing they would not be able to fully remove the cancer.

That's when the couple reached out to a team of doctors at New York City's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center who said they would give it a try.

The family needs to raise the money for the operation by July 13. So far, they've managed to raise a portion of that by remortgaging their home and accepting funds from family and friends, according to Metro UK.

Sophie's parents have also set up a donation page on the fundraising site Just Giving in hopes well-wishers will contribute to their daughter's operation. As of early afternoon on June 27, nearly 3,100 donations had been received, totaling more than $227,000.

Online ventures have proven popular among parents striving to solicit help or support for their children.

Earlier this month, one mother made headlines after asking parents to serve their children ice cream for dinner simply to see them smile.

Diane Roberts' son, Ryan, was born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect. When doctors said they could no longer do anything to help the baby boy, one of Diane's friends, Melissa Neidhardt, took to Facebook and asked all parents to join "Ryan's Banana Split Party."

Users sent messages and posted photos of their families eating the delicious treat in Ryan's honor.

Similarly, mother Shasta Kearns Moore took to the fundraising site Kickstarter to sell her children's book, "Dark & Light: A Love Story For Babies... And The People Who Read To Them," and raise money for her 2-year-old son's cerebral palsy treatments.

Visit the Sophie Roberts Facebook Page to learn more about her story.

Lego and Google Chrome teamup, want to cover Australasia in models and plastic bricks

Lego has allied itself with Google's Chrome browser, creating a web app that lets users craft their own houses, creatures and models, and then delicately place them across the whole of Australia and New Zealand. Celebrating 50 years of pre-teen Lego architecture in the Land Down Under, you can grab a plot of land from the source, start throwing some bricks together now and share your creations on the very public map and Google+. According to Australia's Daily Telegraph, Lego Build hopes to roll out globally through Chrome later this year, but one continent should keep us busy until Google's I/O conference kicks off later this week.

Google modifies Maps, YouTube for Nexus 7 tablet

We've seen Google take Maps indoors, with interior schematics and even photos, but the Nexus 7 tablet brings a new twist to that familiar nav experience with 360-degree venue photos. Engineering Director Chris Yerga demonstrated the new feature within a local San Francisco bar called District, moving the device to show us how the compass and gyroscope work to provide 360-degree views based on your current direction and angle -- it's a pretty slick effect. There's also offline map viewing that expands the Google Labs map caching to include entire cities, which should definitely come in handy for navigating beyond your comfort zone (and mobile coverage area). Naturally, there's also an updated YouTube app, letting you take full advantage of that 7-inch display with video preview grids and HD playback, with a familiar Play store-like interface. Stay tuned for a closer look at these apps and more in our Nexus 7 hands-on.

Romney ends primary season with win in Utah

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney has won the Utah Republican presidential primary, the last contest of a primary season that started with a crowded field in January and ended with Romney the only candidate campaigning for votes.

Romney already had more than enough delegates to claim the GOP nomination. On Tuesday night he won all 40 delegates in Utah.

Nebraska will hold its GOP state convention in July, but Utah held the last presidential primary on Tuesday, almost six months after Romney narrowly lost the Iowa caucuses to former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Since then, Romney has dispatched Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul is still trying to win delegates at state conventions but stopped campaigning in primaries.

Sea levels rising on US East Coast faster than anywhere else

The Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the US Geological Survey.

From Cape Hatteras, N.C., to just north of Boston, sea levels are rising much faster than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most costly coasts in danger of flooding, according to a new study published Sunday.

Sea levels are rising much faster along the U.S. East Coast than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most costly coasts in danger of flooding, government researchers report.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile (965-kilometer) swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches (5 centimeters). But in Norfolk, Virginia, where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches (12.19 centimeters), the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches (9.4 centimeters), and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches (7.11 centimeters).

Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands.

Computer models long have projected higher levels along parts of the East Coast because of changes in ocean currents from global warming, but this is the first study to show that's already happened.

By 2100, scientists and computer models estimate that sea levels globally could rise as much as 3.3 feet (1.01 meters). The accelerated rate along the East Coast could add about 8 inches (20 centimeters) to 11 inches (28 centimeters) more, Sallenger said.

"Where that kind of thing becomes important is during a storm," Sallenger said. That's when it can damage buildings and erode coastlines.

On the West Coast, a National Research Council report released Friday projects an average 3-foot (nearly 1-meter) rise in sea level in California by the year 2100, and 2 feet (0.61 meters) in Oregon and Washington. The land mass north of the San Andreas Fault is expected to rise, offsetting the rising sea level in those two states.

The reality is that I am offering you value by giving you the information you need to help you make an informative decision about this company.

Tripazon Review: Who Are These Guys?

Tripazon Review: How Can You Succeed With Tripazon?

tripazon reviewAs with most network marketing business opportunity?s folks become drawn in to the income potential presented to them. They join the company ready to make some quick cash. The problem lies in the fact that because they are new they really don?t have any ideal on how to market their home based business. When new distributors don?t generate the fast money they were looking for, they give up and quit while blaming the company and saying it didn?t work.

One must understand and be realistic, not everyone will succeed. Which has nothing to do with the company itself but the person who joins the business. One must learn how to generate leads and then convert them into business partners in your business. Leads are the lifeblood for any network marketing opportunity whether you are building your business online or offline. Without leads you will have no business what so ever.

In my experience, one of the best ways to generate leads is to leverage the Internet and implement a marketing system. If you research some more you will find that a lot of top reps in this industry are marketing on the Internet, branding themselves and attracting huge amounts of targeted leads to their offer.

Tripazon Review: Summary!

You can have ultimate success with Tripazon once you have figured out how to generate targeted traffic and leads after you have chased down your family and friends who said NO to your opportunity. What if you could generate 5-10 or maybe even 20 leads per day? Take Action: Here is what you need to do NOW:

Dangerous wildfires spread in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Flames forced thousands of Colorado residents from their homes over the weekend and disrupted vacation plans for countless visitors as smoke shrouded some of the state's top tourist destinations, including majestic Pike's Peak and tranquil Estes Park.

Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade, with more than a half dozen forest fires burning across the state's parched terrain. Some hotels and campgrounds are emptying ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday.

One of the newest fires, a blaze near Colorado Springs, grew to more than 5 square miles Sunday after erupting just a day earlier and prompting evacuation orders for 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists.

Officials had put the fire at 6 square miles but reduced the estimated Monday after more precise mapping.

Firefighters braced for hot temperatures and high winds on the fire lines.

On Sunday, the fire sent plumes of gray and white smoke over the area that obscured at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful."

Winds had started to push smoke away from Colorado Springs and evacuations orders were lifted for the 5,000 residents of nearby Manitou Springs, but area residents and tourists still watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice, who recently moved to the area from Rock Falls, Ill. Rice, her husband, four children and dog. They left a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday.

Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this God-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

In Utah, hundreds of residents evacuated ahead of a 39-square-mile blaze that had destroyed at least some structures. Fire officials weren't sure how many were destroyed, or whether they were homes; sheriff's officials estimated late Sunday it could be as many as 30 structures.

Even while other large fires burn across the West, Colorado's blazes have demanded half the nation's firefighting fleet, according to Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting Monday.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

While no homes were reported damaged in the Colorado Springs-area fire, a forest fire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Sunday that 22 homes and two outbuildings had been burned.

The Estes Park fire destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Also over the weekend, residents of a subdivision near the northern Colorado city of Fort Collins learned that 57 more homes in their neighborhood had been lost to the High Park Fire, which already had claimed 191 homes, authorities said.

The High Park Fire is the second-largest wildfire and among the most expensive in Colorado's history. It has scorched more than 130 square miles and was just 45 percent contained on Sunday, The Denver Post reported.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein, of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Elsewhere, firefighters contended with windy and heat as they battled wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? Also in Utah, officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In Montana, two wildfires were burning in the southwest part of the state, including the fast-moving Antelope Fire, which started Saturday afternoon about 10 miles north of Whitehall and had grown to 462 acres on Sunday. About 100 firefighters were battling that blaze.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said late Sunday that containment against the Poco Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 65 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.
