June 24, 2013 ? How is it that a complex organism evolves from a pile of dead matter? How can lifeless materials become organic molecules that are the bricks of animals and plants? Scientists have been trying to answer these questions for ages. Researchers at the Max Planck Institut f?r Kohlenforschung have now disclosed the secret of a reaction that has to do with the synthesis of complex organic matter before the origin of life.
Since the 1960's it has been well known that when concentrated hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is irradiated by UV light, it forms an imidazole intermediate that is a key substance for synthesis of nucleobases and nucleotides in abiotic environment. The way how UV radiation acts in this reaction to produce complex organic matter was, however, never clarified. Dr. Mario Barbatti and his colleagues in Germany, India and Czech Republic have now shown how this process occurs via computer simulations.
Using diverse computational-chemistry methods, the team has arrived at astonishing conclusions: For example that the reaction does not take place in the hot spot created by the solar radiation. "This has nothing to do with heat, but with electrons," says Mario Barbatti.
The reaction proceeds through a series of electronically excited intermediates. The molecules get into the "electronic excited state" because of the UV radiation, which means that their electrons are distributed in a much different way than the usual. That changes the molecule's attitudes. "But this takes some time," says Mario Barbatti. They showed that the radiation energy is dissipated too fast, and because of that each reactant molecule absorbs hundreds of UV photons before it finally gets converted into the imidazole intermediate.
"This is very inefficient -- and quite extraordinary," says Mario Barbatti. That is why it was quite challenging to comprehend the reaction, explains the physicist from Brazil. He and his colleagues have calculated a lot of possible intermediates, tried -- and discarded most of them. Finally they found out that there is only one single pathway that is consistent with the fast energy dissipation and previous experimental observations.
But why did they work on the computer? Isn't it the case that chemical reactions are worked on in laboratories? "Some intermediates are too elusive to analyze them in the laboratory -- they disappear before we may see them," Barbatti explains. Computational Chemistry allows the scientists to comprehend the reactions in a theoretical way.
"As I said before, this reaction has nothing to do with heat," says Barbatti. The transformation works in a cold environment, as in comets and in terrestrial ices, where spontaneous HCN polymerization is most expected to occur.
The team has published their results, which help to understand the role of solar radiation on the origin of life, in the recent issue of Angewandte Chemie.

Some spaces are awkward. Dark corners or cavernous closets that could really use some light. And tap lights don't always cut it in terms of brightness or aesthetic quality. But Australian designer Flynn Talbot is working on the situation. His aluminum and steel lights, called Latitude, can go anywhere and point in any direction.
The key is that you can attach the suspension cable anywhere on the spherical frame around the light, so it can be directed toward anything and light your space however you want. Talbot lists "indirect uplighting, downlighting, spotlighting" as some options to get you going. There's also kind of a light of the world vibe from the globe shape. How do fish swim? It is a simple question, but there is no simple answer.
Researchers at Northwestern University have revealed some of the mechanical properties that allow fish to perform their complex movements. Their findings, published on June 13 in the journal PLOS Computational Biology, could provide insights in evolutionary biology and lead to an understanding of the neural control of movement and development of bio-inspired underwater vehicles.
"If we could play God and create an undulatory swimmer, how stiff should its body be? At what wave frequency should its body undulate so it moves at its top speed? How does its brain control those movements?" said Neelesh Patankar, professor of mechanical engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. "Millennia ago, undulatory swimmers like eels that had the right mechanical properties are the ones that would have survived."
The researchers used computational methods to test assumptions about the preferred evolutionary characteristics. For example, species with low muscle activation frequency and high body stiffness are the most successful; the researchers found the optimal values for each property.
"The stiffness that we predict for good swimming characteristics is, in fact, the same as the experimentally determined stiffness of undulatory swimmers with a backbone," said Amneet Bhalla, graduate student in mechanical engineering at McCormick and one of the paper's authors.
"Thus, our results suggest that precursors of a backbone would have given rise to animals with the appropriate body stiffness," added Patankar. "We hypothesize that this would have been mechanically beneficial to the evolutionary emergence of swimming vertebrates."
In addition, species must be resilient to small changes in physical characteristics from one generation to the next. The researchers confirmed that the ability to swim, while dependent upon mechanical parameters, is not sensitive to minor generational changes; as long as the body stiffness is above a certain value, the ability to swim quickly is insensitive to the value of the stiffness, the researchers found.
Finally, making a connection to the neural control of movement, the researchers analyzed the curvature of its undulations to determine if it was the result of a single bending torque, or if precise bending torques were necessary at every point along its body. They learned that a simple movement pattern gives rise to the complicated-looking deformation.
"This suggests that the animal does not need precise control of its movements," Patankar said.
To make these determinations, the researchers applied a common physics concept known as "spring mass damper" -- a model, applied to everything from car suspension to Slinkies, that determines movement in systems that are losing energy -- to the body of the fish.
This novel approach for the first time unified the concepts of active and passive swimming -- swimming in which forcing comes from within the fish (active) or from the surrounding water (passive) by calculating the conditions necessary for the fish to swim both actively and passively.

When I was about five years old, my parents took my sister and me to visit the Campbells, who were friends of my mother and father. While the adults engaged in conversation and sipping wine, my sister and I became bored and decided to explore the big house.
In another room quite away, I met the Campbell family dog. She was a senior Basset Hound named Cookie -- white and orange with a grayed muzzle, and chubby -- lying quietly on the floor. I was pretty excited to see her -- our family didn't have a dog, so this was a novelty. I went to her and talked to her, petting her head, leaning over her. And suddenly I felt a "bang!" sensation right on my nose. It stung, like walking into a door, my vision turning red for a moment.
I backed away from the dog, who I decided obviously didn't like me, which hurt my feelings, as I'd hoped to be friends. But I didn't realize she had just bitten me. Maybe I didn't even have the concept of that possibility. I thought we'd just bumped noses in some uncomfortable way.
Later on, I remember rubbing my nose because it itched. My hand came away bloody. Somewhat bewildered, I ambled back into the room where my folks were sitting with their friends. Once the adults got a look at me, they reacted, and I started to piece everything together from their conversation.
No one panicked, though -- they were just discussing what needed to be done, which was to take me to the hospital. Mrs. Campbell worked at the local hospital as a head nurse, and she escorted us in, telling her colleagues matter-of-factly what had happened. As a nurse, she was level-headed about the whole incident. Fortunately, my parents weren't overreacting, either. There was no hysteria, just calm comforting for their child, giving me the sense that everything was going to be fine.
My nose needed a few stitches. While I was getting patched up, the adults asked me about what had happened and I described it as best I could, although I didn't comprehend the whys of it. Mrs. Campbell told me she was sorry Cookie had bitten me. She said it wasn't that Cookie didn't like me, it had just been a misunderstanding of some kind. That made me feel better. I heard my father say to his friends, "It's our fault for not keeping an eye on the kids. I'm sorry about all this."
Years later, I reflect on this incident as not only un-traumatic, but as a singularly positive experience. I was then, and am even more so now, extremely proud of my parents' behavior and attitudes. All the adults involved acted like just that, adults. Each accepted their part of the responsibility for not having prevented the accident. They weren't angry with each other. They weren't upset with the dog or the child.
My parents weren't dog savvy, and they're not particularly animal-loving. But they still acknowledged that this was in no way Cookie's fault, but rather their own, for failing to supervise their child in another's home. The Campbells, for their part, certainly could have had Cookie contained in a room or crate that wasn't accessible to the visiting children. But she was a nice old dog, and I bet they never thought she would bite. Yet, the Campbells knew that what happened wasn't the child's fault -- at any rate, they extended the benefit of the doubt that I wasn't doing anything intentionally mean to the dog to provoke her. They went out of their way to reassure me, which was a very meaningful kindness.
Even at my young age and inexperience with dogs, I remember also feeling strongly that there should be no "blame" upon the dog. I had been worried about the adults finding out something had happened -- worried that Cookie would get in trouble, when I just knew, by some instinct, that she shouldn't. I'd have been devastated if any harmful consequences had come to the dog, even though she wasn't my pet and I'd just met her. My anxiety was that the Campbells might be mad at their own dog. They weren't, though -- perhaps they were surprised by Cookie's action, but they didn't lash out at her. I suppose in the end it was simply a learning experience for them, that it's best not to leave kids and dogs unsupervised, even when you do have a gentle, calm dog, which I'm sure Cookie was, generally.
Of course, everyone was glad that the bite wasn't more severe. The way that my parents and their friends handled the situation, though, gave me a great example and lesson. Today I have a small but noticeable scar on the lower edge of my nostril; but no emotional scarring, no fear of dogs or other fallout. I attribute that, in part, to the admirable actions of my parents and these dog owners.

LONDON (AP) ? Maria Sharapova took quite a shot at Serena Williams ? and it was nowhere near a tennis court.
At her pre-Wimbledon news conference Saturday, Sharapova was asked about a recent Rolling Stone article where the author surmised that critical comments directed at an unnamed player by Williams were referring to Sharapova.
"At the end of the day, we have a tremendous amount of respect for what we do on the court. I just think she should be talking about her accomplishments, her achievements, rather than everything else that's just getting attention and controversy," Sharapova said.
"If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids," Sharapova continued. "Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much in her life, many positives, and I think that's what it should be about."
Williams has been linked to coach Patrick Mouratoglou, but neither has confirmed their relationship extends beyond the court. When Mouratoglou was asked about the topic at the French Open this month, he smiled and replied: "Sorry. I don't understand the question."
According to the Rolling Stone story, posted online Tuesday, Williams spoke about what the reporter described as "a top-five player who is now in love."
Williams is quoted as saying: "She begins every interview with 'I'm so happy. I'm so lucky' ? it's so boring. She's still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it."
That is followed by these words in parentheses from the author of the piece, Stephen Rodrick: "An educated guess is she's talking about Sharapova, who is now dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena's rumored exes."
Sharapova beat Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final. But Williams has won their past 13 matches in a row, including in the French Open final two weeks ago.
At Wimbledon, where play begins Monday, Williams is the defending champion and seeded No. 1. Sharapova is seeded No. 3. They only could face each other in the final.
Williams is scheduled to hold a pre-tournament news conference at Wimbledon on Sunday.
The Rolling Stone article, which was about 4,000 words, drew widespread attention mostly for a one-paragraph reference to the Steubenville rape case. Williams is quoted as saying the teenage victim "shouldn't have put herself in that position."
Two players from the Steubenville, Ohio, high school football team were convicted in March of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl; one of the boys was ordered to serve an additional year for photographing the girl naked. The case gained widespread attention in part because of the callousness with which other students used social media to gossip about it.
A day after the story was posted, Williams issued a statement in which she said she was "reaching out to the girl's family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written."
Williams' statement continued: "What was written ? what I supposedly said ? is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame."
Said Sharapova on Saturday: "I was definitely sad to hear what she had to say about the whole case."

It's a tribute to Gerwig's performance, somehow both clumsy and elegant, that she wins us over despite ourselves, that we come to appreciate her aimlessness in a goal-oriented society ...
This is an odd film (creepier than it knows), and even if you feel the atmospheric company of Dunham-ism, with a little of Whit Stillman, Henry Jaglom, and Woody Allen, the core influence on Noah Baumbach's film is fifty years older or more.
Baumbach usually builds his films around difficult protagonists, but Frances is entirely endearing, at once silly and deep, hopeless and promising.
The dialogue and editing are zippy and generally charming, combining with the tart observations of 20-something culture to create a nice frisson.
A black-and-white salute to the French New Wave (the score is borrowed from Georges Delerue, composer of many a Truffaut and Godard film) that manages to be very much of this moment ...
The movie's a love letter to an actress and her character, but by the end you may feel like an intervention is more in order.
As long as you remember to laugh, Frances Ha is a tolerable experience. Forget the "ha ha" and Frances Ha is beyond unbearable. I found this an odd and often frustrating truth, but it's what makes Noah Baumbach's new movie a success.
Gerwig keeps you on side and rooting for Frances to get her act together in what becomes an affectionate salute to messy lives, an endearing underachiever and a New York state of mind.
Don't be fooled by Frances with all her feigned insecurity and branding of herself as "undateable" and predicting she'll be a lonely spinster. She's a psychopath.
Gerwig's deft screwball timing turns every disaster into a grace note. This may be a comedy of awkwardness, but rather than curl, your toes will tap.

...if you hold your nose and simply wallow through the stench of self-aggrandizement, you'll be rewarded with an experience that will actually tug on your emotions.
Frances Ha provides a sharp, fleet, and very funny look at female friendship and the acceptance of adult responsibilities.
This is very minimalist storytelling much of which feels improvised in front of the camera. The film is more of a character situation than a character story.

Welcome to?All About You, an early learning and development center that services young children and their families. We specialize in working in an urban environment, where we proudly represent diversity through children and families from various backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicity. My name is Erin, and I currently oversee all of the classrooms within this center. Part of my job responsibilities is ensuring that each early learning classroom continuously meets the overarching learning and development needs of all children, while adapting and modifying for individual learning styles. In addition, I make sure all of the families we work with are equally represented within our center.
Recently, we received word that we will be soon welcoming a new family from?China. Although we are a diverse early learning and development center. we have yet to represent a family from China. We are eager to meet this family and welcome their two young children. However, since we have never worked with a family from this country (and currently know very little about this country), I will be working to prepare myself and my staff to be culturally responsive to this family from the first moment we meet them. Below, you will find an easy-to-follow flow chart that outlines the steps that I will take to meet the cultural and individual needs of this family, as well as an explanation of each step.
1.?Evaluate my own personal biases and stereotypes.?One of the most important steps towards becoming culturally responsive to a child and their family is for me to personally evaluate any of my personal biases or stereotypes that I currently hold towards that specific culture. Once I acknowledge these biases and stereotypes, I will be able to dispel them, creating almost like a ?clean slate? to learn accurate information about this country, which will also enable me to response to this family from an unbiased point of view.
2.?Research and become familiar with the family?s homeland and culture. Now that I have dispel any previously held misconceptions, I can embrace the correct information about this family?s home country and /*culture. Although this will provide an overall view of the culture, it will at least allow me to gain a general understanding of the background of the country and culture.
3.?Conference with the family and allow them to teach how they interpret their homeland and culture.?Although I have gained factual information about the family?s home country and culture, it is vital that I conference with the family to allow them to show me which aspects of culture they adopt and which ones they don?t specifically follow. This will allow me to see their family?s culture in relation to the home country and culture. This conference will place me as the student, and the family as the teacher. While I am an early childhood educator, I am not knowledgeable about this particular country and culture. Therefore, allowing the family to adopt the role of teacher will place them in a position of power, creating an opportunity for them to show me how they see their country and culture. This will, hopefully, begin to build a foundation for a relationship and partnership with this family.
4.?Hold an all-staff meeting to discuss the culture of the new family,?Once I have thoroughly understood the country and culture of this new family, it is imperative that the entire staff adopts this understanding as well. Through an all-staff meeting, there will be opportunities for all staff members to evaluate their own personal biases and stereotypes, replacing them with the correct information about this family?s homeland country and culture. In addition, this meeting will allow ample time to thoroughly understand this new family?s culture, with a period to answer any further questions or concerns. This all-staff meeting will help all staff members to be on the same page in regards to culturaly embracing this family.
5.?Prepare the childcare center for the arrival of the family.?After all staff members are knowledgeable and aware of this new family?s home country and culture, another important step is to prepare the childcare center for their arrival. This includes labeling all rooms in their home language, so the family will know where to go. If there are important notices hung up around the room, steps should be taken to translate these into the family?s home language so they will feel included in the center.
6.?Arrange for communication between staff and family.?Once the overall center has been?accommodated for the family, it is imperative that communication between the staff and family is arranged. A translator should be contacted?prior to the arrival of the family, and arrangements should be made to have this translator available if the family chooses to utilize this service. If there are any take-home notes or family communication papers, efforts should be taken to have these translated into the family?s home language to encourage their participation in their child?s classroom from day one.

This will allow the new child and family to share about their home country and culture, per their comfort level, and it will enable the new child and family to see all of the similarities and differences the other children and families have to offer. This cultural day is not intended to single out a specific child or family, but rather it is meant to highlight the positive representation of diversity throughout the early learning and development center.
Through taking the above steps, it is my hopes that both the staff (including myself) and the family will benefit. Through learning factual information about the family?s culture and home land, I will be able to correct any biases and stereotypes that I previously held about this family?s culture and country. This will able me to interact with the family and teach the child without biased opinions. Through holding an all-staff meeting. all of the professionals will be able to be on the same page, approaching this child and family with the same information. It will also provide an opportunity for staff members to ask any questions and to dispel any previously held misconceptions prior to this family?s arrival. Creating a center that is accommodating for the family, including posting signs in this family?s home language and arranging for easy communication, will benefit the staff by allowing them to participate in communication with the family. This will create a better relationship and partnership with the family, which will ultimately benefit both the family and the staff. Through taking all of these steps, it is hopeful that the staff will be able to benefit and will become more open and welcoming towards this family.
For the family, allowing them to become the teachers will emit a sense of power for the family. Through doing this, the family will feel more in control of how others see their home country and culture, rather than just succumbing to the stereotypes and biases. This will benefit the family by allowing them to correct the prejudices with correct information. In addition, through preparing the center for the arrival of the family, the family will hopefully feel a sense of pride in seeing their home country and culture represented within the center, which hopefully will encourage their participation. By providing a translator and materials in their home language, the family may also feel more encouraged to participate and to talk with the staff. A cultural day will also benefit the family, by enabling them a time to share with the entire center about their home country and culture, as well as providing them an opportunity to learning about the similarities and differences others have to offer. It is hopeful that taking the above steps all will benefit, contributing to a sense of unity among the center.

Here?s the situation:? we?ve learned thousands of homeowners are being blindsided with flood claim denials on damage to their foundations, that was clearly caused by Sandy?s flood waters.? The Sass family from Manasquan, New Jersey is the perfect example.? Like most coastal homeowners, they have flood insurance through the federal government?s National Flood Insurance Program, NFIP.? When they noticed clear cracks in their foundation after the storm, they thought for certain, they were covered.? Then, their claim was denied, not because the damage was being disputed, but because the policy language (which was written by Congress in recent years) says it ?will not insure loss to property caused directly by earth movement, even if the movement is caused by flood.?
Angie Hu, a spokeswoman for U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand sent this statement, saying, ?Senator Gillibrand finds this report about thousands of homeowners having their flood insurance claims denied due to bureaucratic fine print to be outrageous. The Senator is looking into ways to change this policy so families devastated by super storm Sandy get the resources needed to rebuild and recover.?
It is a good thing she is looking into this because it will literally take an act of Congress to change the language so these people are protected by the very policy they paid into.
We contacted the NFIP through FEMA?s DC office and no one has called or emailed back.
Keep in mind, this is the very same flood program that is also requiring people to elevate their homes or else they risk coverage refusal completely. And for those residents who have faulty foundations, they cannot raise their homes unless they fix their foundations.? So those folks are either forced to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to rebuild from the ground up or they have to walk away from their homes completely.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A suicide car bomb and other militant attacks killed nine people in northern Iraq on Saturday, as election officials announced preliminary results for local elections in two provinces that showed the bloc of the country's speaker of parliament in the lead.
The attacks are the latest in a wave of violence that has killed nearly 2,000 Iraqis since the start of April.
The deadliest attack was in al-Athba village near the northern city of Mosul, when a suicide car bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a police patrol, a police officer said. Three civilian bystanders and one policeman died while six other people were wounded, he added.
With violence spiking sharply in recent months to levels not seen since 2008, al-Qaida in Iraq and other militant groups have been gathering strength in the area of Mosul, some 360 kilometers (220 miles) northwest of Baghdad.
In the city of Tuz Khormato, 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad, gunmen on motorcycles riddled a civilian vehicle carrying four off-duty policemen with bullets, killing three and wounding another, a police officer said.
Another group of gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in the city of Samarra, killing two policemen and wounding four, another police officer said. Samarra is 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad.
Police also said two civilians were killed and nine wounded when a bomb ripped through a small market late Friday in Baghdad.
Four medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.
Meanwhile, election officials said a partial count of ballots for provincial-level elections held Thursday in Sunni-dominated Anbar and Ninevah provinces showed Sunni parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi's United bloc leading with the largest number of votes in both provinces. That bloc is backed by Iraqi Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi and prominent Sunni sheik Ahmed Abu Risha.
A coalition of Kurdish parties was in second place in Ninevah, which has a sizable Kurdish minority. A bloc headed by Anbar's existing governor, Qassim al-Fahdawi, was in second place in that province.
Iraqis voted in 12 of Iraq's 18 provinces two months ago. Officials had delayed elections in Anbar and Ninevah because of what they said were security concerns, though some Iraqis questioned that rationale and dismissed it as a political ploy related to the unrest in the provinces. The provinces have been the scene of months of anti-government protests.
Final election results are expected to be released in the coming days.
Also on Saturday, the United Nations said another 27 residents of a camp housing members of an Iranian exile group have been relocated to Albania. The move follows a deadly rocket attack on the facility last week.
A total of 71 residents of Camp Liberty have now relocated to the southeast European country, which has agreed to accept 210 of them. Germany has also offered to take 100 residents. The U.N. is urging other member states to accept some of the more than 3,000 living in Iraq.
The dissident group, the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, is the militant wing of a Paris-based Iranian opposition movement that opposes Iran's clerical regime and has carried out assassinations and bombings there. It fought alongside Saddam Hussein's forces in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, and several thousand of its members were given sanctuary in Iraq. It renounced violence in 2001, and was removed from the U.S. terrorism list last year.
Iraq's government wants the MEK members to leave, and the U.N. has been working to resettle them abroad.
Two residents of Camp Liberty were killed in a June 15 rocket attack on the facility. A Shiite militant group claimed responsibility, saying it wants the group out of Iraq.

Britain's Ministry of Defense finished up its release of almost 60 years' worth of UFO sighting reports on Friday with a bang: a 4,300-page cache of documents that describe strange sights over Stonehenge and Parliament, and lay out the reason why the ministry shut down its UFO desk three and a half years ago.
Thanks in part to the proliferation of camera phones, the number of UFO reports in the U.K. doubled in 2008, to 208 reports for the year, said David Clarke, a UFO historian who reviewed the latest files in a YouTube video. Then, in 2009, the pace of sightings tripled, to a running total of 643 reports by November of that year.
"That really did put a strain on the resources that the MoD had committed to this subject, and really led up to their decision to finally pull the plug on Britain's X-Files, simply because they just didn't have the resources to investigate these sightings, or to look at them in any detail," Clarke said. "So they just tended to be filed away."
That was basically what happened to the Stonehenge sighting: In January 2009, the ministry received several photographs that showed a speck in the sky over the millennia-old monument in Wiltshire. "I didn't see anything in the sky at the time, because I was focusing upon the stones," the witness wrote in an archived email. "Upon uploading them to my computer, though, I spotted the discoid shapes in the background. ... I'm sure you get this kind of thing every day! However, I'm very fond of my UFOs so needed to share them!"
The ministry wrote back, saying that it doesn't try to identify the source of UFO sightings "unless there is evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom." Trying to explain every sighting would be an "inappropriate" use of defense resources, the ministry said. A similar reply was sent to a witness who reported seeing "a craft that had green, red and white lights" hovering over the Houses of Parliament in February 2008.

Clarke said many of the mobile-phone snapshots sent in between late 2007 and late 2009, the period covered by Friday's document release, were of such poor quality that it was hard to tell what was going on. The "vast majority" of cases turned out to have down-to-earth explanations, he said. Here's a sampling of the highlights:

The Olympus PEN E-P5 ($1,449.99 list with 17mm lens and EVF) is the latest addition to the Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera family, and it's a winner. The PEN features the same imaging engine and stabilization system as our Editors' Choice OM-D E-M5, but uses a removable add-on EVF rather than a built-in version. It's got built-in Wi-Fi, a first for the PEN family, and an innovative control system that lets you take command of four camera settings via a toggle switch and two control dials. It doesn't have the OM-D E-M5's weather sealed body or kit lens, but it does put a few additional controls at your fingertips.
Design and Features
The E-P5 is bundled with the excellent M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 lens and Electronic Viewfinder VF-4. If the $1,450 asking price is too much for you, it can be had as a body only for around $1,000, but you'll lose a bit of value by not buying it as a kit. The 17mm lens sells for $500 on its own, and the VF-4 is priced at $280. Buying the three separately would put you out of pocket around $1,780, so buying the three represents a $380 discount.
The camera measures 2.7 by 4.8 by 1.5 inches (HWD) and is very heavy for its size at 13.3 ounces. It feels solid in the hand. The Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5, the midrange body in the PEN family, a good camera in its own right, feels almost toy-like in comparison. The E-PL5 is narrower and lighter?it measures 2.5 by 4.4 by 1.5 inches and weighs 11.4 ounces. Even though EP-5's body has the same depth as its smaller sibling, it feels a bit thicker. This is because its tilting rear LCD is flush to the body when closed; the E-PL5's screen juts out a bit.
Physical controls are ample. You'll find the Mode dial, as well as the power switch, shutter release, and Fn button on the top plate. There are front and rear control dials, each of which can control two functions, which will change based on the camera's shooting mode. When the rear toggle switch is set to position 1 the function will change based on the shooting mode?the rear dial controls the f-stop in aperture priority, and the shutter speed in shutter priority, while the front dial adjust exposure compensation in both those modes. If you're shooting in full manual mode, the rear dial controls the shutter speed and the front the aperture. There's some customization of these functions available in the menu system.
When you toggle the rear switch to setting 2, the dial functions change. In most modes the rear dial adjust the white balance and the front changes the ISO. There's some customization of what position 2 does. You can also set it to start movie recording, which some users may prefer to the record button that is located inside the toggle switch. It can also be used to toggle between automatic and manual focus.
There's also a control pad with a center OK button and four directional controls; they control exposure compensation, the flash output, the drive mode and self-timer, and the current focus point. You'll also find buttons to access the camera's menu, change the amount of information shown on the display, magnify the live view frame, enter playback mode, and delete images. Additional settings can be controlled via an overlay menu?it's launched by pressing the OK button. These include the ISO, image quality, focus mode, flash mode, and metering pattern.
The rear LCD display is 3 inches in size and features a stunning 1,037k-dot resolution. It's mounted on a hinge, so you can view it from above or below. Its resolution is greater than the 610k OLED display that the OM-D E-M5 uses, but looking at them side-by-side it's hard to see a big difference. I'd give an edge to the E-P5; the display is very bright and can be used outdoors, even on bright days. The display is touch sensitive, but the touch functionality is limited. It's possible to tap an area of the frame to choose a focus point, or to focus and fire the shutter. This is controlled by tapping a small box on the left side of the display. There's also an option to disable touch focus entirely. It's also possible to move the focus point using the E-P5's rear directional pad.
If you opt to use manual focus, the E-P5 offers a couple of aids to help you grab sharp shots. Turning the focus ring on a Micro Four Thirds lens will activate either focus peaking (which highlights in-focus areas of your image in white or black), frame magnification, or both. It could be better implemented in terms of activation. If you're using a native Micro Four Thirds lens with a focus clutch, like the kit lens, it doesn't actually work when the clutch is set to manual focus adjustment, even if the camera is set to manual focus mode. If you use peaking frequently, and fans of legacy lenses will want to, it's best to assign the Fn1 button to activate it. There's already a magnification button on the body. Once you do activate it, the peaking is extremely helpful in getting an in-focus shot.
If you buy the camera in a kit you'll also get an external EVF. The VF-4 is stunning. It's the best EVF I've used. It's bigger and sharper than the excellent OLED finders in the Sony Alpha NEX-7 and Fujifilm X-E1. The only downside is its size. It's pretty big, adding a big hump to the camera. Both the Sony and Fujifilm cameras managed to work an EVF into the body and also retain a built-in flash and hot shoe; it's unfortunate that Olympus wasn't able to do the same with the EP-5. On the other hand, if you have other Olympus cameras with the AP2 accessory port you'll be able to use the EVF with them (although they'll require a firmware update), and the finder can tilt straight up, which will make it easier to get shots from lower angles. The E-P5 automatically switches to the EVF when you bring your eye towards it, though that function will be disabled if the rear LCD is tilted.
The E-P5 is the first PEN camera with built-in Wi-Fi. It's an impressive, albeit limited, freshman effort from Olympus, in part to the very slick method the company used to pair the camera with your iOS or Android device. In order to do so, you simply need to scan a QR code that is displayed on the rear LCD with your phone. The network information and password are contained within. If you're not within range of another saved network, the camera and your phone will automatically connect when Wi-Fi is enabled on the camera (accessible via a touch-sensitive Wi-Fi icon on the rear display) and the app is launched on the phone. If you're already connected to your home or office Wi-Fi network, you'll first need to disconnect from that in order to get the app working.
So, pairing is easy. What can you do? Your options are limited. You can transfer JPG images and QuickTime videos from the camera to your phone?the app lets you select a downsized resolution or transfer them at full quality. But if you shoot Raw, you're out of luck?you can't transfer them. You'll have to first develop them as a JPG in camera. You can also use the phone's GPS to add geotags to photos, just make sure the clock is set correctly on the E-P5 and that you've enabled the location log in the OI Share app. Images are quick to transfer, though it did take a while to transfer a short video clip.
You can also use your phone as a remote control with a real time live view feed. The speed of the feed is quite good, it's not choppy like we've seen on other cameras with this capability. Touch focus is supported, but you can only shoot in iAuto mode?the only real control you have access to is a self-timer, which will let you put your phone in your pocket before posing for a shot.
Everything about the Wi-Fi works; it's just unfortunate that it doesn't do more. There's no way to connect the E-P5 to a home network or hotspot. So if you're having a party and want to post a few photos to Facebook, you have to first transfer them to your phone and then to your social media profile. You're also not able to email a photo directly from the camera. Other Wi-Fi enabled cameras, like the Samsung NX300 let you do this.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Justice Department has charged former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden with espionage and theft of government property in the NSA surveillance case.
Snowden, believed to be holed up in Hong Kong, has admitted providing information to the news media about two highly classified NSA surveillance programs.
A one-page criminal complaint unsealed Friday in federal court in Alexandria, Va., says Snowden engaged in unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence information. Both are charges under the Espionage Act. Snowden also is charged with theft of government property. All three crimes carry a maximum 10-year prison penalty.
The federal court in the Eastern District of Virginia where the complaint was filed is headquarters for Snowden's former employer, government contractor Booz Allen Hamilton.
The complaint is dated June 14, five days after Snowden's name first surfaced as the leaker of information about the two programs in which the NSA gathered telephone and Internet records to ferret out terror plots.
The complaint could become an integral part of a U.S. government effort to have Snowden extradited from Hong Kong, a process that could turn into a prolonged legal battle. Snowden could contest extradition on grounds of political persecution. In general, the extradition agreement between the U.S. and Hong Kong excepts political offenses from the obligation to turn over a person.
It was unclear late Friday whether the U.S. had made an extradition request. Hong Kong had no immediate reaction to word of the charges against Snowden.
The Espionage Act arguably is a political offense. The Obama administration has now used the act in eight criminal cases in an unprecedented effort to stem leaks. In one of them, Army Pfc. Bradley Manning acknowledged he sent more than 700,000 battlefield reports, diplomatic cables and other materials to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. His military trial is underway.
Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed the charges against Snowden. "I've always thought this was a treasonous act," he said in a statement. "I hope Hong Kong's government will take him into custody and extradite him to the U.S."
Michael di Pretoro, a retired 30-year veteran with the FBI who served from 1990 to 1994 as the legal liaison officer at the American consulate in Hong Kong, said "relations between U.S. and Hong Kong law enforcement personnel are historically quite good."
"In my time, I felt the degree of cooperation was outstanding to the extent that I almost felt I was in an FBI field office," said di Pretoro.
The U.S. and Hong Kong have a standing agreement on the surrender of fugitives. However, Snowden's appeal rights could drag out any extradition proceeding.
The success or failure of any extradition proceeding depends on what the suspect is charged with under U.S. law and how it corresponds to Hong Kong law under the treaty. In order for Hong Kong officials to honor the extradition request, they have to have some applicable statute under their law that corresponds with a violation of U.S. law.
In Iceland, a business executive said Friday that a private plane was on standby to transport Snowden from Hong Kong to Iceland, although Iceland's government says it has not received an asylum request from Snowden.
Business executive Olafur Vignir Sigurvinsson said he has been in contact with someone representing Snowden and has not spoken to the American himself. Private donations are being collected to pay for the flight, he said.
"There are a number of people that are interested in freedom of speech and recognize the importance of knowing who is spying on us," Sigurvinsson said. "We are people that care about privacy."
Disclosure of the criminal complaint came as President Barack Obama held his first meeting with a privacy and civil liberties board as his intelligence chief sought ways to help Americans understand more about sweeping government surveillance efforts exposed by Snowden.
The five members of the little-known Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board met with Obama for an hour in the White House Situation Room, questioning the president on the two NSA programs that have stoked controversy.
One program collects billions of U.S. phone records. The second gathers audio, video, email, photographic and Internet search usage of foreign nationals overseas, and probably some Americans in the process, who use major providers such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Yahoo.

The state Department of Agriculture said Friday that tests on?bees?and foliage showed the deaths are "directly related to a pesticide application on linden trees" that was meant to control aphids.
It said an investigation is underway to see if the application of the pesticide Safari, done last Saturday, violated the law.
To prevent more deaths, bee-proof netting is planned for 55 European linden trees whose blooms attracted the pollinators to the Target parking lot in Wilsonville, southwest of Portland.
State officials are working with the Xerces (ZERK'-zees) Society for Invertebrate Conservation, the city of Wilsonville and the distributor of the pesticide.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff will hold an emergency meeting of top aides on Friday to figure out how to respond to massive protests that brought 1 million people into the streets and also resulted in widespread vandalism and injuries.
Demonstrations across the country on Thursday night were the biggest yet by a movement that came from seemingly nowhere over the past week, and has rallied Brazilians angry about a range of issues from corruption and poor public transportation to billions of dollars being spent to host the soccer World Cup next year.
While the protests are not targeted at Rousseff herself - or any specific politician - the left-leaning leader is under huge pressure as marches have become increasingly violent and also contributed to a recent selloff in Brazil's financial markets.
Rousseff was set to meet with members of her Cabinet at around 9:30 a.m. (8.30 a.m. EDT) in Brasilia, a government official said.
The demonstrations have been mostly peaceful and led by the middle class. But on Friday, many Brazilians woke up to TV images from overnight of masked youths looting stores, setting fires and defacing buildings including the foreign ministry in Brasilia, which had its windows shattered.
Unlike previous demonstrations, much of the violence on Thursday was generated by the protesters themselves, rather than a heavy-handed police response.
At least 77 people were injured, newspaper Estado de S.Paulo reported. One person was killed in the interior of Sao Paulo state after someone drove their car into a group of protesters.
"I support these (protests), but I think it's out of control," said Nilson Chabat, a 31-year-old gas station attendant on his way to work on Friday in Sao Paulo. "Many of us are angry but you can't just go make a mess every day."
The sudden unrest, which started on June 13 when police cracked down on a small demonstration over rising bus fares in Sao Paulo, has shocked a country that until recently was considered a successful emerging-market power on the rise.
The demonstrations have unfolded as Brazil hosts the Confederations Cup, an international soccer tournament that serves as a test run for the much bigger World Cup. Protesters have used the tournament to amplify their outrage at public spending on lavish stadiums, casting a dark cloud over an event that was supposed to bolster Brazil's image globally.
FRUSTRATION WITH STATUS QUO
Polls show that most Brazilians remain happy with Rousseff, and with an economy that has slowed recently but has still been able to keep unemployment at record lows. Unlike recent youth protesters in the Arab world, the demonstrators are not trying to bring down the government, and Brazil's robust democracy appears able to address some of their complaints.
Yet the protests have revealed clear frustration with the status quo. Brazil has some of Latin America's highest taxes but one of the lowest rates of public investment, leaving many Brazilians frustrated with subpar schools, hospitals, infrastructure and police forces.
It's unclear what Rousseff can do in the short term, apart from making a general appeal for calm. Mayors of several cities already tried to yield to one of the protesters' main demands this week by rolling back a recent hike in bus and subway fares, but the demonstrations only grew.
Rousseff, a leftist guerrilla in the 1970s, has expressed solidarity with the protesters' aims and has appeared hesitant to order a crackdown that could just make the crowds even angrier.
But she is also at risk of having her probable re-election bid next year complicated by both the growing unrest and a possible backlash against the scenes of violence.
Some think she is already tardy in her response.
Fernando Rodrigues, a columnist for Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, wrote that Rousseff's silence on Thursday night "sums up the lack of action by politicians."
"They seem, in essence, to be only rooting for the tsunami to pass," he said.
