10 Reasons Why Public Relations is a 'Must-do' for SEO in 2013 ...

public-relations-word-cloud

Many people today recognize that search engine optimization (SEO) and public relations (PR) have much to offer each other.

The latest Google changes have put a real emphasis on high quality, unique content that is linked to by quality sites. And this is where real public relations ? as opposed to crappy news release distribution ? can play such a crucial role.

There are real opportunities for great business. What follows are 10 reasons why SEOs should really get to grips with PR in 2013, based on my conversations with the?people who are making the two work together.

1. The PR Industry is Definitely ?Getting it?

Most of us who have been in link building for a while have in the past experienced a certain degree of frostiness from the PR industry. But that is clearly changing and people are breaking out of silos.

Mike Cherenson is a former Chair and CEO of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and is EVP of Success Communications Group. He sees the importance of SEO and link building.

?Authentic and relevant link building, aimed at driving engagement, informing publics and building mutually beneficial relationships should be a part of every public relations and SEO effort," Cherenson said.

But not only should link building be a part of every public relations effort, public relations also has much to offer SEO.

?Public relations professionals are skilled storytellers and content generators and should be a part of every SEO effort," he said. "The future of SEO is not in the technology, it?s in the ability to tell stories that readers and Google will find interesting? and that?s public relations.?

And Cherenson understands the value of linking.

?Links need to provide value to the reader," he said. "Media will be more likely to link to content that is compelling and provides information that goes beyond the original reporting.?

Another PR professional is Ken Deutsch, EVP of JPA, a healthcare communications firm and a seasoned specialist in public affairs.

His company takes SEO and link building very seriously. But that?s still not the case throughout the industry.

?Many PR people stop at getting media coverage and think their job is done. They get a placement in the New York Times but they don?t follow up to make sure a link is put in. So they?re not taking advantage of the SEO side of the story.?

And while many media outlets provide links, there are some that don?t link out as a matter of policy.

That influences the targets he goes after, ?because they don?t put links in, it?s not worth putting as much energy into getting placement there.?

2. There is a Tremendous Synergy Between SEO and PR

Putting it simply, SEO enhances a press release. Use popular keywords and the press release, never mind any stories it generates will continue to bring search engine traffic. And the editorial links the press release generates bring direct click-throughs and lead to higher rankings.

Public relations enhances SEO by focusing on what?s newsworthy, crafting a great story, finding editorial opportunities, getting coverage and building relationships with reporters and editors. And of course, they got the negotiation skills to ask for a link without really asking for a link.

?PR helps SEO directly by increasing branded traffic," said?Lindsey Kirchoff,?a Media and Speaker Relations specialist at HubSpot.com. "We always see a bump in branded traffic after a big campaign! Indirectly, PR helps SEO generate inbound links from quality sources that not only gets first-touch exposure to new audiences, but credibility in the eyes of search engines.

?SEO grounds PR with hard, measurable data. PR has always been notoriously difficult to pin down, but SEO adds hard numbers to the equation. I also think that SEO allows PR to be less isolated from the rest of the team ? sometimes PR can feel like an island. SEO helps PR connect their work to the rest of the company's business goals.

?Finally, SEO establishes credibility for PR for keywords. You look much more credible to a news source if you come up high for the term they are reporting on!?

3. Editorial Links Bring a Big SEO Boost

Most PR links are extreme quality links, according to Jordan Brannon, the SEO guy at Coalition Technologies. Why? "Because getting them is not a free for all ? you have to earn your media placements,? he said.

But the rewards are worth the effort.

?If you get 200 high quality editorial links, it?s worth more that 20,000 low quality links,? Brannon said.

However, most reporters work to a deadline and you have to be swift in your response to get in.

?Most editorial opportunities are time sensitive and you need to act quickly. That means you need to have the authority to reply on the client?s behalf," Brannon added. "And you have to have an email account on your client?s domain ? it?s not good saying you?re a marketing agency.?

Will Marlow was formerly a Press Secretary for two congressmen before founding a company that specializes in search engine marketing. He knows that to get those all-important editorial links, sticking to deadlines is crucial.

?You need to understand that you?re dealing with someone who has a hard deadline. It?s like a train going by in the night and there?s one open boxcar that can take you wherever you want to go," Marlow said. "But jump too early and the reporter won?t write about you: jump too late and the reporter won?t write about you. You got to get it just right.?

And it?s not unusual to miss opportunities.

?If an SEO was learning from any PR guy, they would all have stories about how they missed opportunities because someone internally didn?t get back to them or didn?t give the reporter what they need," Marlow said.??If the reporter wants to talk to the CEO and the CEO is playing golf, then you?re not going to get the story.?So you?ve got to collaborate with people within the company and make sure that the right people are available.?

4. There?s a Big Cascade Effect

Journalists will often quote, comment or enlarge upon other journalist?s work. Bloggers are also constantly citing other stories.

So if you get your story covered in one prominent media outlet, you?ll quickly see a cascade of similar stories and links spring up.

You?ll get links you never even asked for.

Miranda Miller wrote about How Google Rakes In Over $100 Million in Search Advertising Daily, based on research from Larry Kim of WordStream.

In writing that report, Kim was directly targeting the Wall Street Journal for a link ? and succeeded. The story really benefited from the cascade effect and attracted coverage and links from literally hundreds of quality media outlets.

5. You Win Bragging Rights For Your Client

Clients just love to write ?As featured in ..." on their website, whether its the Washington Post, Inc. Magazine, or whatever.

That builds consumer trust in their brand and makes it more likely they?ll buy.

And you also increase trust from other reporters. If you?ve already been quoted or covered by a respected publication, then other reporters will think you?re a safe bet to write about, too.

6. PR Skills Can be Learned ? or at Least Understood ? Easily

Kirchoff has this advice for SEOs who know little about PR:

?SEO experts should think of PR as a way to build strong referral links ? something that should be on their radar already. If you have a PR expert in the office, start by taking them out to lunch and chatting. After all, PR is all about building relationships.?

But of course, learning about public relations will help you understand the process ? but it might teach you that there?s a lot you don?t know. If that?s the case you might do better to partner with a PR resource.

7. It?s Easy to Partner With an Up and Coming PR Person

Mona Moore is an SEO who has teamed up with a small PR company, Hepner Communications, to pitch their services together.

?I think SEOs are always so focused on getting those links back to the client, we sometimes forget how important it is to nurture those long-term relationships necessary to continue working with specific media outlets,? Moore explained.??And PR reps are great at finding opportunities - but, they don't always take full advantage of those opportunities from an organic SEO standpoint.?By working together, SEOs and PR people are able to maximize exposure to a higher level than either of those entities by itself.

Joel Gross, who works with Brannon at Coalition Technologies, describes himself as the SEO tech guy.

?I know how to build and code websites so that they are search engine friendly, and I understand that in order to achieve visibility and revenue for our clients we need to build high quality links and work in tandem with traditional and social media," Gross said.??I know what needs to be done, but Jordan is able to bring in the creative aspect and wow factor that is needed in order to gain the attention and keep it focused where it needs to be. He devises how we frame the content and package it for the consumer in the most digestible and memorable way.

?The best advice I?d give to an SEO would be to get to know your client?s people, their background and story, what?s unique about the company," Gross said.??And remember, this is news and human interest so your stories don?t always have to be selling product. You can have perfectly good story and link from a story on say, ?work places that are pet friendly?!?

8. You?ll Build Media Contacts That You Can Use Time And Time Again

Contacts are essential both to PR people and to reporters.

?One mistake I made at the start was sending out too much poor stuff," Kim said. "Blasting out press releases is over-rated. What you need to do is get to know the reporters or bloggers you?re targeting.

?Read their articles every day, get a sense of what they?re interested in and only approach them with what you know they?ll be interested in,? Kim continued.??Start small and work your way up. Once you?ve built a relationship, they?ll start contacting you.?

He said he has found that PR is the fastest way to generate those backlinks on related industry websites, but you?ve got to go past distribution services and build your own contacts.

?We are diligent in keeping a database of related editors here," Kim said. "So we're sending press releases directly to the editors and not through a service. However, we also post the press releases to PRweb or PRnewswire to get the added Internet news site exposure (i.e., Yahoo News)."

Kim said those personal relationships increase the chances of coverage so much it?s "unreal."

"We now get lots of calls from editors who ask ? is there an engineer over at such and such a company that we could talk to?" Kim said.??Now, when they see our press releases, they always read them. And they?re more likely to publish them because we?ve been helpful.

If you?re an SEO who new to PR, the best place to start is by reading the editorial guidelines of the publications you?re targeting, Kim advised. Then you know what they?re looking for and can pitch accordingly. Don?t pitch something they clearly don?t want.

And don?t forget editorial calendars ? you can see months in advance what the publications are going to be covering.

9. It Strengthens and Extends Your Relationship With the Client

If you learn how to do proper public relations effectively or bring in a competent professional that you work well with, then you increase the respect your client has for your work. That can only strengthen your relationship and help ensure that they?ll stay with you.

10. It Opens up Additional Income Streams

It probably goes without saying that with the increasing interest in this area, it should offer some profitable and additional income streams to your agency.

There are tremendous publicity and quality links available through effective public relations. You?ll probably have failures to start with but if you keep at it, your skills will grow and you?ll get the benefits.

How do you cope with failures?

?I don?t believe in failures ? it?s a matter of setting your expectations," Kim said. "You can?t start out and immediately get coverage on CNN. Far better to pick a local target and learn from it. Every time you do it, you have more experience.?Say you approach 10 journalists and you get nothing but two reply and say I?m not interested because it?s not exactly what I do ? you?ll get a better idea of what will work next time.?

The Lowest-Grossing Movie of 2012 Made $264 (and Starred Christian Slater)

OK, so we all know that Windows 8 is a flawed operating system. In particular, the OS has rather awkward and counterintuitive controls for switching between its tiles and its standard desktop interface, and finding key features such as the control panel can be difficult at first. At the same time Microsoft?s (MSFT) newest operating system, for all its warts, does a lot of things right and is a bold and innovative attempt to remake personal computers for the post-PC era. The key thing you have to understand about Windows 8 is that it will not work well for you unless you buy a PC with touchscreen capabilities. In other words, if you have a classic PC that only has

The Best Films of 2012 | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi.com

2012 was a fantastic year in film. With a year full of breakout stars, amazing?performances, and sensational endings, here were a few of my favorite films.

10. Looper

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis teamed up in this sci fi thriller set in 2014. Hitmen, called ?Loopers?, work for the mob of the future that uses time travel to eliminate targets.? What makes Looper more than just a shoot em up action film is the deeper story involving Sara (Emily Blunt) and Cid (Pierce Gagnon). Even with the family?s side story, Looper is full of action. Seeing Bruce Willis shoot guns is a flashback to his early Die Hard days. ?Eye popping visual effects paired with trippy time travel made Looper the sci-fi treat of 2012. The movie also gave us The Rain Man, one of the best nicknames for villain in movie history ? sorry Pinhead.

9. The Raid: Redemption

This Indonesian martial arts film pits one man against a gang of psychopaths when he and his team get trapped in a high-rise during a raid. The Raid: Redemption strips away the CGI and cable tricks that have infiltrated martial arts movies the past ten years ? it?s all knuckles and boots to faces for 101 minutes. Raid?s a reminder that even the simplest story can turn into an amazing film if you have badass action, a fearless hero, and insane villains. The film?s climatic 2-on-1 fight scene shows exactly why Mad Dog is the smallest guy, but the biggest threat.

8. Your Sister?s Sister

When Emily Blunt?wasn?t?starring in time travel movies, she had time to churn out a few smaller films like Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and Your Sister?s Sister. In Your Sister?s Sister, Blunt plays Iris, a young woman trying to help her friend Jack (The League?s Mark Duplass) deal with the loss of his brother. She invites him to stay at their family?s cabin where he has a brief encounter with Iris?s sister Hannah. The three spend a weekend together that will reveal Jack?s not the only one dealing with issues. Your Sister?s Sister is beautifully written and directed by Lynn Shelton ? the multi-dimensional characters make for a?humorous?story that tugs at your heart strings.

7. Chronicle

A superhero origin story + found footage = one of the year?s most unique films. Andrew (Dane DeHaan), Matt (Alex Russell), and Steven (Michael B Jordan) find a foreign object that gives them superpowers. Like Uncle Ben told Peter, ?With great power comes great responsibility? ? well, somebody should?ve told Andrew that because he?s the proverbial bull in the china shop with his new found powers. It?s hard to find good young actors, but the three stars give great performances ? Michael B Jordan reminded everyone why they fell in love with him during the television series Friday Night Lights. Chronicle seemed to come out of nowhere and is a shockingly good story, entertaining, and poses the question ?What would you do??

6. Skyfall

Bond #23 is entertaining from ?007?s motorcycle chase, to the last fight scene, Skyfall is a riveting?roller coaster?ride that hits on all things Bond, old and new. Daniel Craig suits up for his third time as 007 and delivers another great performance with help from Javier Bardem?s and his dazzling performance as super villain Silva. Skyfall has the best opening scene/title sequence of 2012. A great chase scene plus Adele belting out ?Skyfall? was the perfect start to a Bond film. After all these years, they?re still able to keep the Bond franchise fresh by adding new blood like Cloud Atlas? Ben Whishaw as Q and Naomie Harris as Eve MoneyPenny. Skyfall is action, tears, laughs, and most of all, a lot of fun.

5. Perks of Being a Wallflower

One of the year?s best films came from a novel by writer/director Stephen Chobsky. The story of Charlie?s (Logan Lerman) awkward integration into high school is a trip in the time machine for anyone who?s ever been a freshman. Perks beautifully captures teenage angst and how we navigate the early years that shape us. Perks soundtrack that includes The Smith?s ?Asleep? and David Bowie?s ?Heroes? is the perfect background music to Charlie?s story. The film also has breakout performances from Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller, and a post Harry Potter Emma Watson.

4. Argo

It would be hard to imagine, ten years ago, Ben Affleck would be one of Hollywood?s best directors. The once laughable actor turned in an Oscar worthy film with Argo. Argo is the tale of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis where a group of Americans hide in a Canadian ambassador?s home until the CIA sends in one man for an extraction. The extraction plan? Pretend to be a Canadian movie crew on a location scout for a film called ?Argo?. The story is told through tense scenes in Iran and back in the CIA office during the 11th hour of the extraction. The brilliance of Argo is its heart pounding third act that will have you on the edge of your seat, even though history books have already told us how it ends. That?s the sign of a good drama. Ben Affleck emerged from Argo as one of this generations best directors and a true visionary.

3. Django Unchained

This spaghetti western about a freed slave hell bent on freeing his wife wouldn?t be a Tarantino film without a little bit of controversy. It also wouldn?t be a Tarantino film without its great storytelling. Django is not the historic film Lincoln is, but a highly entertaining revenge film that hits on different emotions. The uncomfortable dialogue and in your face bigotry is the perfect tone for a film like Django. The film gives us an amazing performance from Jamie Foxx and our first look at Leonardo DiCaprio as a villain ? the evil plantation owner Calvin Candie. Someone needs to sign DiCaprio up for Bond 24.

2. The Dark Knight Rises

The finale of the Nolan/Bale Batman era was a bittersweet goodbye. Seven years after Christopher Nolan breathed new life into a dying franchise, Batman gave audiences one last epic battle before he said goodbye. The Dark Knight comes out of retirement to face off against a mad man named Bane (Tom Hardy) who plans to destroy Gotham. TDKR hits on a lot of notes, but none better than the relationship between Bruce (Christian Bale) and Alfred (Michael Caine). One of the best things about the Nolan trilogy is how Bruce/Alfred relationship has a different arc in each film ? Nolan saved the best arc for his last film. Tom Hardy?s physical transformation into Bane made everyone in Hollywood take notice. ?Joseph Gordon-Levitt steals the show with the film?s best performance and adds TDKR to his 2012 resume that includes Lincoln, Looper, and Premium Rush. ?The film?s ?Holy waterfall caves Batman? ending was every comic book nerds dream.

1. The Avengers

Can a movie be highly anticipated, a box office success, and one of the best films of the year? The short answer: Yes, Avengers. From the opening frame to Thanos post credit scene, Marvel?s The Avengers is the most entertaining film of the year. Joss Whedon did the impossible blending six heroes, five movies, and sibling rivalry into movie masterpiece. Avenger?s jaw dropping action sequences alone made it the best theater experience of 2012. What really kept the film afloat are the fantastic performances from Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Robert Downey Jr.?s witty one-liners, and Mark Ruffalo?s seamless integration into the Avengers team. Now if we could petition Marvel to let Joss Whedon would work on every film.

Boston College's Jerry York earns 925th win, becomes all-time winningest NCAA hockey coach

Boston College defeated Alabama-Huntsville 5-2 on Saturday night, and the win gave head coach Jerry York his 925th for his career. York is now the all-time winningest college hockey head coach.

As expected, No.1-ranked Boston College had no issues in their 5-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday, in the first game of the 2012 Mariucci Classic. The big news from the game is that the win gave legendary Boston College head coach Jerry York his 925th for his career.

Win No. 925 pushed York to the top of the all-time winningest coaches in NCAA hockey. York surpassed Ron Mason, who coached the majority of his college career at Michigan State.

York mentioned how he never strived for personal goals, but always measured himself by the amount of championships he could win. He also deflected credit for this achievement by saying it's his players who helped his success:

"Coaches coach and play to win trophies," commented York. "Maybe when I sit down on some porch in 10 years thinking about it, but I have always been about team. I have never really sought individual goals. Starting with Dave Taylor back at Clarkson, Rob Blake at Bowling Green, and a whole bunch of guys at BC."

In the quest for win No. 925, Boston College got out to an early 3-0 lead over Alabama-Huntsville in the first period. Cam Spiro put Boston College on the board just three minutes in the game with a backhanded tap-in goal which came off a rebound. The goal was Spiro's first of his career.

Then just past the midway point of the first period, Bill Arnold put Boston College up 2-0 as he skated around a defender and had an easy goal due as the Alabama-Huntsville goalie was on the ice after committing early on the play.

Danny Linell made it 3-0 just over a minute later, and that lead proved to be enough for Boston College to get the win. The other two goals scored by Boston College were courtesy of Brendan Silk and Steven Whitney.

If your intent is to confuse this book is successful!
The Authors are long-winded and have tossed in every factoid they can muster into the book.
They really providing a reference encyclopedia about the topics. A kind of 1 book Wikipedia.
The question remains:
Are these 2 professors ?flipping the bird? at their competitors? (A very competitive environment)
Did they intend the book as a reference but it got picked as a regular textbook?
Why so many editions? Software, etc listed in the book are already obsolete.

That?s the computer/software industry. Anything 6 months old is obsolete.

Victorinox Swiss Army 16GB Jetsetter Flash Drive

The Victorinox Swiss Army 16GB Jetsetter Flash Drive ($49.99 list) is a multi-tool that happens to have a 16GB USB flash drive as one of its implements. You really should be buying this drive for its tools first, and as a USB drive second. While completely usable and both Windows and Mac compatible, the Jetsetter really shines as the tool you bring out to fix your eyeglasses, tighten a screw on your laptop, pop the top on a cold brew, or snip the tag off a recently acquired shirt. Once you've done all those things, the clip-in USB drive can keep important documents handy as a backup to your usual portable hard drive.

Design and Features
The Jetsetter looks like a thicker version of those classic mini Swiss Army Knives that you keep on your keychain just in case you need it for something. The 16GB version we looked at here is in classic Victorinox red, the 8GB version ($39.95) comes in black, and the 32GB version ($99.95) comes in clear/silver. It's a little thicker than the company's classic knives, thanks to the 16GB removable flash drive. The drive has a blinking LED Victorinox shield to let you know it's in use. The drive comes with a two-year warranty, but the metal tools have a lifetime warranty.

The tools include a magnetized Philips screwdriver (handy for eyeglass or minor tech repairs), bottle opener (important for after work), a spring-loaded scissors, a pop-out ballpoint pen, key ring, and a pair of tweezers. We verified that the screwdriver is useful by using it to install a SSD on a PCIe expansion card for another review. The tools are the same ones you'd see on a classic Swiss Army Knife, but the omission of the knife blade means that you should be able to take this tool on a plane with you. Current TSA rules allow both scissors and screwdrivers in your carry-on luggage.

The 16GB flash drive can be unclipped from the tool, or used in situ. The Jetsetter tool puts a little weight on the USB port, so I'd suggest removing the tool if you are going to keep the drive plugged in on a flight or other extended use situation. The drive uses a slim USB connector, so make sure the drive is right side up before inserting it. "Up" should be when you can see the 16GB label on the drive.

The drive comes with a Victorinox security app for OS X, but you can use the drive right away for storage. The drive comes formatted with exFAT, so it can handle large 4GB+ files on both OS X and Windows 7/8. If you're still using Windows XP you may need to download an exFAT update from Microsoft. The Victorinox security app purports to store files securely and allow you to keep your Safari Web surfing sessions private by storing cookies and history files away from your Mac. We weren't able to get the app running on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, but your mileage may vary.

Performance
This is a slow USB drive. In addition to the USB 2.0-only speeds, the drive itself has a poor transfer rate. We measured a glacial 36 MBps read and 18 MBps write speed using the AJA System test. Plus the drive took 1 minute 20 seconds to transfer our standard 1.22GB test folder. To put this in perspective, USB 2.0 hard drives like the Iomega eGo Helium 1TB took only 42 seconds for the same folder plus had a write speed twice as fast as that of the Jetsetter. We couldn't test the drive using PCMark 7, so we couldn't directly compare the drive's speed to other flash drives.

If you need a speedy flash drive for everyday use, look at USB 3.0 drives like the LaCie RuggedKey (16GB) or Editors' Choice SanDisk Extreme 3.0 (64GB). The added utility of the Swiss Army tools on the Jetsetter are really what make the drive attractive. As a USB flash drive, it's passable but not extraordinary. Think of the Jetsetter as a multi-tool where one of the tools is a part-time USB flash drive, and you'll be okay.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Victorinox Swiss Army 16GB Jetsetter Flash Drive with several other flash drives side by side.

Eric's Online Diary: Solving some family history mysteries

His was a hard life and he died at the age of 49 from pneumonia. Already a widower, his six children who had been sent to a children?s home in Doncaster, were now orphaned.

My mother had told me many stories of life in the orphanage, of the cruel matron (Mrs Nurse). She had been 14 when her father died and she?d had the hope that soon, she would have been able to leave Stanley House (the children?s home) and become the carer at their house in Adwick Le Street, looking after the children, while her father worked.

As it happened, her father died and my mother was placed in service at a large house in Yorkshire where she worked until joining the WRNS during the Second World War and training as a cook.

I?d asked my mother quite a lot about her father, but I?m not sure how much she had known about his life (he died when she was 14) and she died when I was 11 so there?s only so much you?ll tell and 11-year-old. Later, I took the opportunity to ask my Uncle Dick (cousin Jennifer?s dad). He knew a few things, but was a couple of years younger than my mother and would have had even less opportunity to talk to his father about his past.

So there were lots of untested stories about Richard Gibson Little, which Mike has summarised as:

1. ?His birth and death registrations show his name only as Richard Little, so why during his lifetime does he use the middle name of Gibson? His army records and medals from the First World War also show him as Richard Gibson Little.

2. ?Did the name Gibson come from the maiden name of his first wife? This was a story I?d heard from my mother and may have passed on to Mike. The story was that he?d fallen in love with and married the daughter of a family of wealthy shopkeepers from Carlisle. They had disapproved and when the woman died in childbirth, he?d left Cumberland and gone to fight in France, taking her maiden name as his middle name. A similar story, with variances was told by my uncle, Dick Little.

3. ?Who were Richard?s parents? Was his father called Joseph? Online research had not been helpful, creating more questions and no answers.

4. ?Did a maiden aunt bring him up after his mother was said to have died three or four years after his birth?

5. ?On Richard?s death, it was said there was a ?father? who declined through solicitors, to take responsibility of Richard?s children who remained in Stanley House, the orphanage?

6. ?Richard?s ?father? was said to have moved to Cheshire, remarried and had two sons with his second wife.

7. ?Richard'ssecond wife, my grandmother Nelly Beatrice Burrows, descended from a Scottish connection.

Mike has been interested in family history for some years and is quite experienced, so I was pleased that he took on the task of trying to find out the truth. His research started with Richard?s death, which is always a sobering event.

The Death Certificate shows he died of Broncho Pneumonia on 15 December 1937 at Springwell House, Doncaster Urban District, aged 49. ?At the time he was living at Village Street, Adwick-le-Street about five miles north-west of Doncaster. By researching the web site www.workhouses.org.uk/Doncaster/ it seems Springwell House built in 1897 in Balby, had been the local Workhouse and it doesn't sound a good place to be. ?A quote from this web site says:

?After the Local Government Act, 1929 abolished the Poor Law Guardians from 1 April 1930, responsibility for public assistance, and the former workhouse, fell upon Doncaster County Borough Council. The council renamed the premises Springwell House Public Assistance Institution. The buildings continued to function as a local authority hospital and provide accommodation for the destitute and for those who in the language of the period were classed as 'mentally deficient'. Initially, because of the 'poor quality of the accommodation' it was proposed not to adopt Springwell House as a hospital within the National Health Service. However, in the event the premises were taken over by the NHS and were designated as the Western Hospital in 1950. The hospital was used mostly for maternity and geriatric patients. It was demolished in 1974 and the site redeveloped for a primary school and private housing.?

Consequently, we can reasonably assume that Richard was a patient at Springwell House due to the medical condition from which he subsequently died.

The death certificate records his age as 49, suggesting a birth in 1888. ?As the family indicated that Richard was born in Cumberland, a search of the Birth Records enabled Mike to obtain a birth certificate in the name of Richard Little born 9 April 1888, a date that matches the family-quoted date.

This certificate records the birth at Ruckcroft, near Ainstable, a small hamlet to the north-east of Penrith, his mother being Margaret Little (nee Lowis), a charwoman, who appears to be illiterate as she had to make her ?mark? in completing the registration.

No father?s name is shown on the certificate with the space provided being struck out. ?At the end of the 19th century this action by the Registrar generally indicated that the father was unknown or that the mother was not prepared to declare it and, therefore, Richard seems to have been illegitimate.

Mike then began tracing Richard in the census records available within his lifetime, with the following results:

1891 ? shown as Richard G [suggesting he was already named Gibson] aged two; a nurse child; living at Cross House, Becks, Ainstable with Anthony and Mary Sander. ?

Initial research did not produce any firm connection between the Sanders and Margaret Little (nee Lowis) other than Anthony Sanders being the son of Joseph Sander, Registrar, who registered Margaret?s birth. Becks is within a mile of Richard?s place of birth and west and south of Ruckcroft.

1901 ? shown again as ?Richard G? aged 12, this time living as son with Joseph and Margaret Barnes at Ruckcroft. ?Joseph was an agricultural labourer but in later life became a corn miller. Joseph?s parents, and eventually Joseph, were millers at Dale Mill, Ainstable.

1911 ? Richard cannot be found with or without his G, but would have been 22 years old. He served in the Great War with the York and Lancaster regiment which mainly recruited from the south Yorkshire (Hallamshire) area, so he may have moved there for reasons of work. Easy for a single man to slip through the census.

Turning back to the 1901 census, Mike researched the Barnes family and found that Margaret, Joseph?s wife, was Margaret Little on their marriage certificate. She was shown as a widow and her father as Henry Lowis. Was Margaret Barnes, the same person as Margaret Little, nee Lowis, the mother of Richard? Had she not died as the family thought and had she taken him back into her care once she had a secure station in life?

Mike needed to establish the real connection between Margaret Little/Lowis and Joseph Barnes, so he searched Cumberland Records for marriages of a Margaret Lowis (and alternatives such as Lewis and Lowes) and found a marriage to a John Little in 1871. In the 1881 census, Margaret and John were living at Castle Dyke, Ainstable, with their sons Henry Lowes Little (b.1871) and John Richard Little (b.1879). The census entry immediately prior to this family was that of a Henry and Jane Lowis. Tracing Henry and Jane back through the census records confirms that Margaret was their daughter, as did a copy of her birth certificate giving her birth as 11 April 1851 to parents of Henry Lowis and Jane Lowis (nee Gibson).

To get closer to the Lowis/Little connection, in June 2012 Mike spent three days visiting the Carlisle Archives to examine specific Parish Records and found baptism records for Margaret (8 February 1858 at Ainstable ie seven years after her birth) and most of her nine siblings. In addition, he found Parish Records confirming her two marriages to John Little (11 Nov 1871) and Joseph Barnes (28 Oct 1891). ?Both men were shown as bachelors and Margaret Little as widow when she married Barnes. The 1911 census shows there were no children to this marriage.

So it looked as if Richard was the son of John and Margaret, explaining his surname and with the Gibson connection coming from Margaret?s mother?s maiden name. Margaret was clearly quite keen to keep her family surnames in memory because she?d used her own maiden name as the middle name for her first child. Her husband John had died, Richard was cared for by foster parents until Margaret got back on her feet and married again, then he was brought up by his mum and stepfather - all explained (or was it?).

Why was John Little not shown as Richard?s father on his birth certificate and what had happened to her other two sons? Mike subsequently traced John Little?s death to Sleetburn Colliery, Brandon and Byshottles just east of Durham on 8 January 1885 - Richard wasn?t born until April 1888, three years later. John Little could not have been his father. ?

Like a lot of family history trails, this one was throwing up as many questions as answers.

One thing that is an obvious change in social history in the second half of the 19th Century is that people were far more mobile. One of my great grandparents moved from rural Norfolk to the bustle of Liverpool, another moved from Norfolk to East Yorkshire; there was emigration to Canada and there was migration to London. People that had worked on the land for generations were being pushed off by mechanisation and they were also able to earn better wages by working in industry.

The fact that John and Margaret Little moved across the Pennines from near Penrith to Durham is not such a big leap. Durham was a thriving coal-mining area and would be hungry for workers. The connection with Durham seems to have come about because Margaret?s younger sister, Sarah, married John Healey and they moved to Co Durham where John Healey worked in the mines. I guess Margaret and John heard there was good money to be earned and followed them.

So, upon Richard?s birth in 1888, Margaret had been a widow for more than three years. We know she was working as a charwoman (cleaner) and Mike was able to confirm that her two sons Henry and John were living with their father?s family.

Mike has not been able to find a baptism record for Richard. He has also searched the official Bastardy Records for the period to see who may have taken financial responsibility for Richard until Margaret married Joseph Barnes, but these did not extend beyond 1874 and so proved fruitless. ?In the April 1891 census he was, of course, being cared for by Anthony and Mary Sander.

So who might Richard?s father have been and what would the Sanders? motive have been for looking after him?

Anthony Sander, who was caring for Richard as a two-year-old in 1891, was the son of Joseph Sander b.1802. In the 1851 census, this Joseph Sander shows as farmer of 65 acres and also a Registrar of Births and Deaths, living at The Vicarage, Ainstable with his wife Ann, a daughter and four sons, including Anthony (b.1831) and another called Joseph (b.1836) in Ainstable. Anthony married Mary and they also had a son called Joseph b.1867 in Ainstable.

You will recall that family lore states that Richard?s father was called Joseph, which may have been Joseph Barnes (his stepfather) but there are now a few other Josephs who have stepped into the limelight. Could either the son or grandson of the original Joseph Sander, both also called Joseph, be Richard?s father?

The first Joseph (b.1836) can be discounted as he died in 1869.

Anthony?s son, Joseph (b.1867) left home between 1881 and 1891 moving to Benwell, north of Gateshead, to become a crane driver. He was living with Richard Pearson and his family who had all been born in Ainstable and this was probably the connection that took him there. By the 1901 census, he had moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, become a Bank Porter and married Jane Chalder in 1893. ?She came from Alston near to Ainstable. In the 1911 census the family were still in Newcastle and Joseph was now a Bank Messenger.

The question is whether this Joseph was Richard?s natural father. This can only be answered if the Sander family can be traced and they have the knowledge.?He was certainly of an age to have been the father and the connection of Ainstable between Joseph and Margaret is clear. ?Further, it could be possible that Joseph?s parents, Anthony and Mary, cared for Richard as a ?family? son as Margaret was unable to provide financially for Richard.

This seems a good explanation of why Anthony and Mary Sander were looking after Richard. Perhaps Margaret returned to Ainstable from Durham a widow with two sons. The Little family took in the sons and Sanders offered her some cleaning work where she caught the eye of young Joseph ...

Perhaps a deal was struck by the grandparents to help Margaret out in return for keeping their son?s name ?guilt free??

Joseph Sander, who may have been my great grandfather (there?s no proof, but some circumstantial evidence) died in 1932 aged 65.

After the 1901 census, there?s no trace of Richard Gibson Little (my grandfather) until he pops up as a soldier in the Great War. The regiment he joins is a small one which recruited from a distinct area and so it?s quite likely that he?d gone to South Yorkshire seeking work and had joined up soon after the outbreak of war. He?d been wounded and sent home for a spell. He seems to have gone ?home? to Cumberland, met Annie Elizabeth Braithwaite and married her on 20 September 1917 at Ousby ? a village south-east of Ruckcroft and Ainstable. ?

There is no father?s name shown on this marriage certificate, suggesting that Richard was illegitimate. Clearly, Richard did not take the name Gibson from Annie but certainly from his grandmother, Jane Lowis, whose maiden name was Gibson. ?Sadly, the story about his first love dying was true as Annie died on 9 November 1919 during childbirth and there is no reference of the child surviving ? it was not made compulsory to register a stillbirth until 1927. ?My Aunt Margaret (Margaret Smith) has the prayer book given to Annie on her confirmation on 12 May 1910 by the Rector at Ousby.

Richard also shows himself as Gibson on his second marriage, to my grandmother Nelly Beatrice Burrows. ?Nelly?s birth certificate shows she was born on 6 Apr 1894 at Low Catton, Pocklington, east of York. ?Her father and his family come from Burston, Norfolk and her mother?s family are East Yorkshire based (both well documented), so no Scottish connection here.

Richard?s marriage certificate to Nelly records his father as Joseph Little. This is most likely to be his late stepfather Joseph Barnes. Mike thinks that Richard gave the name Joseph and occupation miller to the Rector and he had incorrectly written his name as Joseph Little instead of Joseph Barnes. Joseph had, of course, taken responsibility for and acted as Richard?s father following his marriage to Margaret, so he deserved some credit. Probably, no attempt was made to correct the mistake as Richard had other things on his mind (it was his wedding day) and both Joseph Barnes and his mother Margaret had died a few years earlier.

The question of Joseph Barnes being quoted as ?father? in official documents such as the census, is common during the 19th and early 20th centuries when viewed in the light of second marriages by one partner; i.e. Margaret ? Joseph was a bachelor on marriage to Margaret.?Margaret died of Stomach Cancer on the 30 May 1916 at Ousby Mill, Ousby, as the widow of Joseph Barnes, corn miller ? Joseph had died in early 1915 in Ousby. ?Mike visited St Luke?s Church, Ousby and with the help of a graveyard plan in the church, found and photographed the adjacent sites of Margaret and Joseph?s graves although no headstones are erected.

Sadly, after Nelly?s death in 1933 (at the age of 39), all of their children, except John, were taken into Stanley House Children?s Home run by Doncaster Council. ?Upon Richard?s death in 1937 family lore states that a ?father? (grandfather) had declined to take responsibility for the children. Who might have turned their back on the family?

The only father figure still living at Richard?s death was John Burrows, Nelly?s father and the children?s grandfather. At this time he was 76 years old, a widower, and understandably unlikely to be willing (or able) to take in the children. He died in Doncaster in 1940.

So where has this research left those family mysteries?

Mike has established:

? ?Richard was illegitimate, with no natural father established. He clearly was given the name Gibson from his grandmother, Jane Lowis (nee Gibson).

? ?His mother was Margaret Lowis born 1851; died 1916 who married John Little (died 1885) and later married Joseph Barnes with whom she brought up her son.

? ?Richard?s natural father cannot be determined and, whilst I am happy to point the finger at Joseph Sander, Mike thinks it is unlikely. He thinks that if this was the case Margaret and Joseph would have married before or shortly after Richard?s birth as, being single, neither had any reason not to do so. Bearing in mind that Joseph?s grandfather was the local Registrar, a man of standing in the community, to legitimise the birth would have been a priority. Of course, this doesn?t explain why the Sanders looked after Richard as a young child.

? ?If Joseph Barnes was the natural father the same argument (no restrictions on marrying) hold good, so why wait three years. Based on Richard and Nelly?s marriage certificate it was Joseph Barnes who family lore believe to be Joseph Little, father of Richard. This is supported by the father?s occupation being shown as miller on the certificate.

? ?Nelly Burrows was certainly not Scottish - her family roots are in Norfolk and Staffordshire.

? ?The question of a father moving to Cheshire can be discounted.

? ?There was no maiden aunt and Richard?s mother did not die until much later when he was an adult. Perhaps the Sanders were the maiden aunt?

If you?ve stuck with this posting to the bitter end, well done. Some family history research provides rollicking good stories like the frontiersman Zachariah Burrows, other stories are rather more forensic. Thanks again to Mike Towers for his diligence - this was a complicated one to unravel and there remains just enough uncertainty to keep that murky air of mystery that has made Richard Gibson Little so intriguing to us all.

If anyone wants access to the family tree just mail me and if anyone knows who my great grandfather really was then I?d love to know!

Redlands musical trio practices for Rose Parade

REDLANDS - They have marched for miles and missed some sleep, but the hard work is more than worth it for three local high school instrumentalists who will perform with the Pasadena City College Honor Band in the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade on Tuesday morning in Pasadena.

"The best part has been getting to know all the other band members," said Phillip Lucero, 17, a senior saxophone player at Redlands East Valley High School. "We're all so focused on what we're doing, and it's easy to bond over the music we're making."

Phillip and fellow Honor Band members Tyler Neill, 17, a senior, and Hector Lange, 16, a sophomore, both trumpet players from Redlands High School, have been carpooling to and from Pasadena for weeks of

intense musical rehearsals, marching practices and pre-parade appearances.

They performed at Disneyland on Friday and look forward to two BandFest gatherings before the parade itself.

The three also have other musical obligations - when you rehearse and perform in Redlands until late at night and have to get up with the sun to carpool to Pasadena, "it's kind of inevitable that you're going to lose some sleep," Phillip said. "But we don't mind."

This is Phillip's second time to march in the Rose Parade, and Tyler's fourth. Hector is participating for the first time. All three boys are experienced musicians and members of many regional honors ensembles.

The Rose Parade is special, though.

"I would have missed out on a lot if I hadn't been part of this," Tyler said. "The friends I've met, and instructors I learned a lot from and like."

Four years with the Honor Band have also solidified Tyler's ambition to go into music education.

Hector, the newbie of the group, said the experience has been tiring but satisfying. He has several concerts to play in the days following the parade, he said, but he will make it.

"I'll have time to sleep before school starts back up," he said.

This time next year, Hector will be performing in Europe with the Riverside Community College band, the Marching Tigers, so he will miss the Tournament of Roses.

He said he'll probably audition again in his senior year.

The Honor Band rehearses every Sunday in November and December and almost every day during the winter break to prepare for the 6-mile trek down Colorado Boulevard. The students march more than 25 miles in rehearsal before they step off on the parade route.

Each year's Honor Band starts with a core group of Pasadena City College band members, and 200-plus Southern California high school band members are added. Some 600 high school students audition for places in the Honor Band, the official host band of the Tournament of Roses.

The theme of this year's parade is "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" The Honor Band's music includes "From Maine to Oregon," "Everything's Coming up Roses," "Defying Gravity" and a Beatles medley.

Band members memorize the music, which takes some effort but also aids in unifying sound and marching moves, Phillip said.

TIP! In your home, remove all the incandescent light bulbs from their fixtures and replace them with ones that are energy efficient. In addition to being good for the environment and lowering your electric bill, they are more long-lasting than traditional bulbs.

Since the real estate market is in bad shape, people are choosing to improve their homes. Here is some advice and information you may want to consider when you take on your next weekend project or major remodel project. If you know a lot of things when dealing with home improvement projects, then you can make better decisions.

Consider a heavy-duty fence if you live near a wooded area. This can keep woodland critters like skunks, coyotes, possums and rabbits out of your lawn and garden.

TIP! A new paint coat is one of the best exterior improvements around. Not only does it increase your home?s curb appeal, paint is also the first layer of protection your home has against the elements.

Cleaning your gutters is a home improvement project that can be done quickly and have a large impact. Clogged cutters can cause a lot of damage. This causes wood rot. Keeping gutters clean makes a difference and is easy to do.

TIP! A coat rack mounted to the wall can be an elegant way to display your jewelry. Only display costume jewelry ? nothing expensive.

If you are thinking about adding a wood fireplace to your home, you may want to reconsider. They may look good, but they are very inefficient thanks to all of the heat lost. In addition, a fire needs a fresh supply of air to survive and it takes it from inside your home. Your fireplace will use up a good portion of your home?s oxygen.

TIP! If there is a lot of space in the attic, you should install a dormer window to make the area more usable. This will give your home?s exterior a nice appearance and give you additional square footage.

Insulate the attic to save money on heating costs. Heat rises over time and a tremendous amount of heat is lost in the fall and winter season in houses with poor insulation. You should be able to find quality insulation in most hardware stores and installing it yourself should not be too hard.

TIP! An air conditioning unit is not one of most attractive appliances. In certain areas, though, air conditioning is an absolute necessity.

If you update your flooring, make sure your family begins taking their shoes off at the door before walking on the floors. Provide storage and slippers near every entrance so that relatives and guests take their shoes off. This can go a long way in helping to keep dirt and debris from scratching or staining wood floors or carpeting.

TIP! Whenever you can, it?s a good idea to choose natural materials to improve the interior of your home. They provide great value and good looks, too.

Your house is a great way to showcase your personality. Increasing numbers of people are looking to home improvement endeavors to enhance their current dwellings instead of purchasing new homes. With these tips you can start out on a wonderful renovation journey.
