401(k) strategies: Should money be taken out before or after taxes?

401(k) fund withdrawal is the subject of Question No. 7 in this Simple Dollar mailbag. Our expert says given the option, a Roth 401(k) ? where the money is taken out after taxes right now ? is the best bet.

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / July 2, 2012

Kansas state Sens. Susan Wagle, of Wichita, and Mark Taddiken, of Clifton confer during a Senate debate in this May 2012 file photo at the Statehouse in Topeka, Kan. Both support creating a 401(k)-style retirement plan for new teachers and government workers. Navigating the many options of a 401(k) plan can be a tricky and confusing process in itself.

Everyone in my family has brown hair except for our youngest child. I?ve never noticed any effects on my hair from the swimming other than it feels soft after swimming and loses a bit of shine.

Recently, after one of our regular swim sessions at a local pool, a person asked us if our youngest had ever had green hair from swimming (as his hair is very light colored). She suggested (from experience) that we should use conditioner in his hair just before getting in the pool.

Given that her hair looked great, I thought this was a tactic I?d pass on to any readers who were spending a lot of time in the pool this summer.

Q1: Cell phone life expectancy
?I?ve just spent several weeks, several hours trying to fix my cell phone through the store (they replaced my SIM card because the old SIM cards weren?t working on the new 4g network). Through their tech support. Their final solution was a hard reset (wiping my phone clean and starting over again). So far so good, except I still have the same original problem. The phone wasn?t synching with my email accounts, calendar or contacts.

In the setting back up phase, I have just found out that my Windows Mobile 6.x operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft. They are forcing everyone to move to Mobile 7, i.e., new phone. The apps store is no longer available, including the software to sync to my PC.
?I just tried an alternative way of syncing through my gmail account. It?s not working either.

Apparently, my 2 year old phone is obsolete. I feel like I?m being forced to migrate to a new phone.

I don?t do games, internet or need apps.
?I just want text, email, calendar and contacts on my phone. Right now, I get 25% of what I want and what I had.
?I use Wi-Fi, no data service needed.
?The big thing, I want something that?s going to last 4-5 years.

SO NOW, I?m researching a new cell service and phones. Decided to check which might have the longest life expectancy. Of course, there?s no such research, except some antecdotal information. Looks like the average life expectancy on a cell phone is 12-18 months.

I am willing to give up email, meaning give up the smart phone for something simplier, if it means I can keep the same phone for 4-5 years.
?Is that so unrealistic?
?What are the cell phone companies intentions? Are they going to push everyone to smart phones?
?What?s the average life expectancy of the simpler phones? Is it better than the smart phones?

Do I go with the newest operating systems and the newest device? With the assumption that they all have about the same life expectancy and just leapfrog the timing. And lower my expectation of longevity to a maximum of 2 years? I hate that idea. That goes against every frugal fiber of my being.
?- Cal

Your biggest concern seems to be software obsolescence on your cell phone, and that?s a tough situation. The cell phone market moves pretty quickly through software on the major smartphone operating systems (Windows, Android, and iOS).

The reason for that is that most cell service providers operate contracts on a two year basis and then offer heavily discounted phones for new contract signings, meaning most people do replace their phones at around the two year mark. The entire market basically revolves around the idea that everyone?s switching their phones in two years.

If I were you, I?d just get the best ?free? phone from your provider of choice and hop on the two year rotating bandwagon. It?s what I?ve been doing for more than a decade now and it?s worked fine. Even the low-end phones have most of the features you describe. For example, U.S. Cellular ? my provider ? offers two phones for free with a new contract that do everything you describe. Other providers have similar low-end offerings.

Q2: MLM question
?I have a question about MLMs if you have time. A friend of mine is doing zeekler and says she is able to make a lot of money with almost no work. This always is a red light to me because I believe it almost always takes work to make a lot of money. Do you have any opinion on zeekler? Thanks in advance!
?- Andy

Zeekler in essence works like nearly every other MLM/network marketing business out there. Essentially, anyone can sign up to sell the product for a commission, which in this instance is auction bids, but it takes a lot of effort to sell these bids. So how do people make money? They convince other people to sign up to sell the product, using the original person as a referral, and the referrer gets a cut of the sales commission.

All of these systems work using more or less that same model. You only make a lot of money if you?re near the top, meaning you have a lot of people you?ve referred who are out there making sales.

Your friend might be in this position with zeekler, but it?s also very likely that your friend is mostly just seeking another rep that used them as a referral ? in this case, you.

I don?t like this business model very well. While there is nothing inherently dishonest about it, the nature of the system tends to draw in people who use really shady practices, plus it?s often hard for people just starting out to build a big empire of referrals as the market is already saturated with them.

Q3: Discovering new music
?How do you go about discovering new music? All of the radio stations around here seem to play the same eight songs over and over again. I like some of the music my kids listen to but a lot of it is awful. There?s got to be a better way of finding interesting new stuff.
?- Jerry

I usually either use Youtube or Pandora.

With Youtube, I just look up videos of songs I know I like, then follow the ?recommended videos? links a few times until I start seeing videos for music I?m unfamiliar with. As long as I stick with music that I know I like, I?ll usually end up finding stuff that?s at least tolerable. For example, last week I spent a lot of time discovering Shirley Bassey on Youtube.

With Pandora, you can set up a radio station based on an artist that you like. That station will mix in songs from other artists, and you can vote these new songs up or down to help Pandora figure out what you like and don?t like. I?ve found a lot of music this way.

Q4: Asking for money at wedding
?I am a recent law school graduate who is getting married in October. Currently jobless, although there is part time work waiting for me in August after the bar. My fiancee is a PhD candidate on a stipend. Needless to say, we both have some sizable student debt.

As we were getting our wedding registry together, it occurred to me that we really don?t need much at all. ?Need? is even too strong a word for our situation. We?ve either thrifted everything or got it second hand through family. It all works, and I can?t imagine why we need new items that serve the same function at this juncture in life. They?d be nice, true, but they aren?t necessary.

And so, I thought, what are some things that are holding back the next stage of our lives? What could people really help us with, as generous family and friends are prone to do for weddings?

My answer: our student loans. Realizing, of course, that the social sentiment of gifts is important, and that my idea is a bit weird for the circumstances, I?m wondering whether we should just be asking for money to help us start our lives. On one hand, I don?t want people to feel offended by that request; it could be viewed as too forward. On the other, our loans are truly the biggest impediments to getting to that next phase of our lives together. My friends and family are generally very understanding people; but there is a bit of tradition and practice involved in a wedding.

So, if you have any input on that, I?d really appreciate it. Do we forego the wedding registry and ask for money, in lieu? Or do we not do the registry and say nothing? Or is this just a bad idea?
?- Geoff

This would be something to discuss with the people closest to you (parents and perhaps grandparents and siblings), but I wouldn?t broach the subject with the wider group of people attending your wedding.

The important thing to remember is that a wedding gift is just that, a gift. People are choosing to give you something. The only reason registries exist is so that people who choose to can use it as a hint as to what gift to get for you. Telling someone what gift to give you is rather tactless.

If you receive a gift that you won?t use, you can usually return that item, of course, which quietly solves the problem.

Q5: Cold homemade laundry detergent
?I?ve been using your homemade powdered laundry detergent in my front loader, and I just noticed today when I pulled my clothes out that there were goopy lumps of detergent on them. I only use the cold cycle, and I use about 2 tablespoons per load. Have you ever had this problem? If so, how did you correct it? I am assuming that the cold water didn?t do a good enough job dissolving the grated soap in my detergent.
?- Kelly

I haven?t personally experienced this problem. We have a top-loading washer and I wash most clothes on warm-cold or cold-cold and I haven?t seen ?globs? in my clothes that I can recall.

Typically, I add some water to the basin before adding detergent, and then I let a bit more water run in before putting my clothes in. That?s likely a big part of the difference.

My suggestion would be the same whether you?re using homemade powdered detergent or store-purchased powdered detergent: spread out the detergent when you add it. Don?t just add it all in one spot. Distribute it around the machine yourself.

Q6: Prayer
?Did you find prayer to be a useful tool during your financial recovery?
?- Alvin

Absolutely. I find that prayer is incredibly powerful for putting my mind at ease and helping me to focus on what I need to do.

Of course, I never prayed for any sort of direct intervention from God to solve my money problems. I didn?t pray for, nor did I expect, money to start falling from the sky. Instead, all I asked for was guidance and resolve to do what I needed to do.

Whether or not the guidance and resolve I needed came from a higher power or not is a theological question that is beyond my skill level to debate, but I can certainly say that the act of prayer helped me toward finding the answers I needed and the toughness to follow a new path.

Q7: Before or after taxes?
?The company that my husband works for will match his 401k contribution up to 5%, we are getting ready to up the 2% he currently contributes to the 5% max. My question is they give the option of having the money taken out either before taxes or post taxes, which is the better option? Is there a difference in the amount of taxes we would have to pay when he retires?
?- Denise

I?m not 100% sure what options are available to you from your description, but it sounds like you have the choice between a regular 401(k) (where the money is taken out before taxes) or a Roth 401(k) (where the money is taken out after taxes).

If that is the case, a Roth 401(k) ? where the money is taken out after taxes right now ? will result in you paying less taxes when he retires. Any money that comes out of a Roth 401(k) once you reach retirement age is tax free.

If you have the option to get a Roth 401(k) for your contributions, you should do so. Your employer match will be contributed to a regular 401(k), so you?ll have some of your money in retirement (the money you contributed to the Roth) being tax free and some (the money your employer contributed to the regular 401(k)) being taxed.

Q8: Pennies
?A friend of mine just told me that the government is strongly considering stopping production of the penny and probably the nickel, too. How exactly will that work? How will they give change?
?- Aaron

There are a lot of possible plans out there floating around.

The one I?ve heard a lot about lately ? and the one I?m probably most in favor of ? is simply stripping away the last digit from our prices. For example, if something costs $1.54 today, they?d just round it to $1.5. If something costs $2.49, they?d just round it to $2.5. There would be no need for the nickel or dime. Sales taxes would be rounded, too, just as they are today. Nickels and pennies remaining in circulation would just be deposited in banks and eventually the metal would be used in other manufacturing processes.

Why am I in favor of this? It currently costs the government 2.5 cents to make a penny and 11.1 cents to make a nickel, according to this report. That seems outrageously wasteful to me.

The change would take some getting used to, but it would be a pretty nice money saver over the long term.

Q9: Interest rate versus APR
?Could you explain the difference between an interest rate and an APR? I bought my first place a few years ago and never understood it. Now my brother just closed on his first place and we are both thoroughly confused!
?- Lois

The APR you?re quoted is a combination of the loan?s interest rate with other expenses associated with your loan such as the origination fee.

APR is a better reflection of the true value of your loan than the straight interest rate, because some lenders will quote you a low interest rate and then tack on a bunch of fees. The APR would include those fees.

Truth in lending laws require banks and lenders to post the APR right along with the interest rate they?re charging. Of course, they don?t require institutions to explain what the APR actually is.

Q10: Interest rate increase
?Will the interest rates on savings accounts ever go back up? I used to get 5-6% on my savings back in 2005 and 2006, but today I can barely get 1%.
?- Ellen

The interest rates on savings accounts roughly follow the Federal Funds Rate, an official interest rate that?s set by the Federal Reserve Board that says how much interest is charged when banks make short-term loans to each other. Banks are free to give out whatever savings account rates they want, but it would be poor business for them to stray very far from the Federal Funds Rate.

From the middle of 2005 to early 2008, we went through a period where the Federal Funds Rate was relatively high, often above 5%. That was reflected on the high interest rates that banks were giving out on their savings accounts. When the economy started struggling in 2008, the Federal Reserve dropped the Federal Funds Rate pretty quickly and savings accounts follow suit.

The real question is whether or not the Federal Funds Rate will ever go up again. Usually, the rate goes up whenever the economy is doing really well and it goes down when the economy is doing poorly. The long-term economic forecasts I?ve seen seem to indicate that the rate will stay low until sometime in 2014, but, just like weather forecasts, that may very well change in the coming months or years.

My gut feeling is that we?ll see an economic recovery and a rise in the Fed Funds Rate (followed by a rise in savings account interest rates) in the next five years or so.

The Mandate Is a Sin Tax

The court is as confused about taxes and penalties as we are. Here?s how Chief Justice John Roberts, author of the controlling opinion in the ACA case, distinguished them. Taxes, unlike penalties, entail no criminal sanctions. As long as you pay your taxes, you won?t be punished. Penalties, unlike taxes, depend on whether you knew you knew what you were doing. And penalties, unlike taxes, can be onerous to the point of destruction.

US manufacturing shrinks for first time in 3 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years, adding to signs that economic growth is weakening.

Production declined, and the number of new orders plunged, according to a monthly report released Monday by the Institute for Supply Management.

The slowdown comes as U.S. employers have scaled back hiring, consumers have turned more cautious, Europe faces a recession and manufacturing has slowed in big countries like China.

"This is not good," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG, an institutional brokerage. Though the report "does not mean recession for the broader economy, it is still a terribly weak number."

The trade group of purchasing managers said its index of manufacturing activity fell to 49.7. That's down from 53.5 in May. And it's the lowest reading since July 2009, a month after the Great Recession officially ended. Readings below 50 indicate contraction.

Stocks fell after the report was released at 10 a.m. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped more than 40 points in midday trading.

Economists said the manufacturing figures were consistent with growth at an annual rate of 1.5 percent or less. That would be down from the January-March quarter's already tepid annual pace of 1.9 percent.

"Our forecast that the U.S. will grow by around 2 percent this year is now looking a bit optimistic," said Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics.

Despite the discouraging data, most economists aren't predicting another recession. Though the ISM report suggests manufacturing is contracting, it typically takes a sustained reading below 43 to signal the economy isn't growing.

Still, U.S. manufacturing, which has helped drive growth since the recession ended, is faltering at a precarious time.

Americans have pulled back on spending, which drives roughly 70 percent of growth. Europe's economy is likely in recession, which has hurt U.S. exports.

And China's manufacturing sector grew in June at its slowest pace in seven months, according to a survey released Sunday by the state-affiliated China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.

The sharp drop in U.S. factory activity overshadowed more positive news on housing. U.S. construction spending rose for the second straight month, though spending remains well below healthy levels.

Manufacturing will likely stay weak for the next few months. The ISM's gauge of new orders, a measure of future activity, plunged from 60.1 to 47.8. That's the first time it has fallen below 50 since April 2009, when the economy was still in recession.

Fewer new orders reflect growing concerns of businesses. In addition to slower global growth and less spending by U.S. consumers, many worry that U.S. lawmakers won't extend a package of tax cuts at the end of the year.

Bricklin Dwyer, an economist at BNP Paribas, said the uncertainty "has left businesses unwilling to invest."

A gauge of production in the ISM's survey fell to its lowest level in more than three years.

U.S. factories are also reporting less overseas demand. A measure of exports dropped to 47.5, its lowest level since April 2009.

A gauge of employment edged down but remained at a healthy level of 56.6. That suggests factories may still be adding jobs. Manufacturers have reported job gains for eight straight months.

Overall hiring has slowed sharply this spring. Employers added an average of only 73,000 jobs per month in April and May. That's much lower than the average of 226,000 added in the first three months of this year. The unemployment rate rose in May to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent, the first increase in a year.

Worries about slowing job growth are outweighing the benefits of lower gas prices. A measure of consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth straight month.

Slower job growth and falling confidence are weighing on consumers' willingness to spend. Americans cut back on purchases of autos and other long-lasting factory goods in May, the government said Friday.

There have been a few optimistic signs.

The housing market has steadily improved.

Construction spending rose 0.9 percent in May from April, the Commerce Department said in a separate report Monday. It was the second straight monthly increase, even though the level of spending still isn't healthy.

The increase was driven by a surge in residential construction. Home sales are up from the same month last year. Mortgage rates are at the lowest levels in history. And prices have begun to stabilize in most markets.

The economy could also get a boost from lower gas prices, which have tumbled more than 60 cents per gallon since peaking in April. The result is that consumers have more money to spend this summer on other goods, from autos and furniture to electronics and vacations, that fuel economic growth.

Stocks mixed amid expectations of help from Fed

By msnbc.com news services

Stocks closed mixed Monday as expectations of more stimulus from the Federal Reserve put a floor in the market after data showed the manufacturing sector contracted for the first time in nearly three years last month.

The Institute for Supply Management's June manufacturing index showed the factory sector suffered its first contraction since July 2009. The data from the world's biggest economy added to a picture of deteriorating business activity painted by similar surveys in Europe and China.

But even with the troubling outlook stocks were remarkably resilient, especially after posting their biggest daily gains this year in the last session. Investors said weak data points were increasing hopes that the Federal Reserve would intervene to boost the economy with more easy money policies.

"I would think that the market would be down far more than it is and I think it's because there is some underlying support from Federal policy," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia."

"Investors are unwilling to get too ahead of themselves with regard to the pressure they'll put on equity prices knowing that in the event that that comes out they could have their heads handed to them," said Luschini.

UBS cut its year-end target on the S&P 500 index to 1,375, from 1,475. The firm's equity analyst Jonathan Golub, strategist at UBS, cited deterioration in incoming economic data; the Supreme Court's healthcare ruling, which he says will contribute to greater partisanship ahead of year-end fiscal discussions; and a more contentious tone among European policymakers, despite some success at the most recent Euro summit.

The next Fed policymaking meeting takes place July 31-August 1.

Mergers and acquisitions activity also helped plug the market. Shares in Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc rose 8.9 percent to $30.72 after Bristol-Myers Squibb Co said it will buy biotechnology company. Shares of Bristol-Myers added 1 percent to $36.31.

Shares in Best Buy jumped as takeover expectation continued around the company. On June 26, Best Buy founder Richard Schulze was reported by the Wall Street Journal to be exploring a buyout of the company in combination with Credit Suisse.

Euro zone manufacturing shrank again in June and factories are preparing for worse, according to business surveys showing jobs were cut at the fastest pace in two-and-a-half years. The data showed factories in Germany and France are succumbing to a downturn that started in southern Europe.

Manufacturing in China, the world's second-biggest economy, also worsened in June with export orders, usually an indicator of global economic health and trade flows, posting their biggest fall since December.

"This is clearly very, very troubling. It indicates that at least in the month of June the manufacturing sector of the (U.S.) economy contracted and there is meaningful evidence of, at a minimum, disinflation," said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors LLC in Albany.

Separate data showed construction spending rose to its highest level in nearly 2-1/2 years in May, but market reaction was muted.

Need another RPer for a character development focused RP

In "Shadows of Lynwood Forest" we will focus on developing your character through an 'adult passage' type scenario.

Setting and History
The RP is set in a world where creatures far stronger, faster, and smarter ruled the lands and the humans. For reasons unknown, these races of super creatures known as Master Races were wiped out from all but memory. All that remains of these warriors today are their spirits, or rather, shadows of their souls. There were many different races involved in wars all over, but there were three major races that were instrumental to the destruction of the Master Races. The names of these Master Races are forbidden, knowledge only possessed by the Elders. Most of what is known of the Master Races is only that of what the Elders tell of. There are many stories of each of the Master Races. Each story tells of the reign of the Master Races without any word of their fall.

Though none know how it came to be, it is known that they are no longer around. After the fall of these Master Races, most of the humans suffered great loss. Only the slaves of the three major Master Races managed to survive in the aftermath. These survivors formed tribes and hid in Lynwood Forest. As time proceeded, the tribes steadyly moved further out of the forest until they no longer resided inside what is now a forbidden place to go. Each tribe is associated with one of the major Master races and they each have different feelings and beliefs about the Master Races.

The Tribes
The Tribe of the Wolf fears the terror of the Wolf. They see them as horrible beings that slaved their people into submission with evil acts of violence for sport. They can be just as vicious as the Wolf, its fight fire with fire with them. The Wolf hunts in a pack and always puts the pack above itself making it the perfect team player, even if it has to "take one for the team" every once and awhile.

The Tribe of the Eagle views the Eagle as a guardian. They feel that they protect them from evils of the world. They tend to see the good in people. The Eagle is a great predator, and they say the best defense is a great offense.

The Tribe of the Snake worships the Snake for its trickery and mischief. They enjoy pulling legs... and sometimes arms too, its all for the fun. They will do anything for a good laugh or a good time even if its at the expense of others. Selfish and greedy the Snake does things only for itself.

Today
Three tribes, though separate, practice a generally similar rite of passage, though for different reasons. In the journey of becoming an adult, a young man/woman is sent into the forbidden Lynwood Forest, they are suppose to survive and return in a fortnight. You have just become of age, but what will you do when you run into two other people?

The Characters:

(Guy) Wolf: OPEN and accepting, please fill out a character form and submit it

(Girl) Eagle: "Rose Bell" as played by Horseygirl

(Guy) Snake: "William Fras" as played by awesomeskaterdude

Comments
You are a regular human being to start out. Later on you will receive some powers that help aid you in your quest of adulthood and to survive Lynwood Forest. Remember this is all about developing your character. Think about what kind of person you want your character to end up like then make that a goal for your character or shoot for a different goal but end up like that. Be creative and have fun. I need one more person to play the Male Wolf character, so please hop up and get a character out there. Also I have limited access to the internet which will change soon but my point is I expect quantity and quality in each of your posts. post at a minimum of once a week. Make it interesting and fun to read. Get them creative juices flowing!

Click here to sign up for Shadows of Lynwood Forest!

Rules
Post at a minimum of once a week, we will be going for a while so please be willing to commit.
Think of this RP as written for 17 year olds, they know what sex is but this ain't about the sex, this is about the characters. So yes they can have sex if you want them to but keep the "phone sex" to a minimum.
When you write, write as though you are your character. What I mean by that is make your character react to what they know and how they feel not what other writers reveal that they know or feel only in writing not in dialogue.
Ask questions, Im always willing to explain this idea more thoroughly.
Make this RP your own. Its free flowing with some plot guidance but the rest is yours.
Last but not least, have fun.

Super Guppy delivers space history to Seattle

John Brecher / msnbc.com

A crowd in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle watches NASA's Super Guppy aircraft approach Boeing Field, carrying a key piece of a space shuttle mockup that will go on display at Seattle's Museum of Flight.

By Alan Boyle

SEATTLE ? It may not be a real space shuttle, but it's ours.

Today NASA delivered a key piece of the mockup that astronauts used for space shuttle practice to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, my hometown. And it arrived aboard one of the most ungainly-looking airplanes ever built. The wingless mockup is known as the Full Fuselage Trainer, or FFT. The plane has a nickname that's more colorful: the Super Guppy.

The Super Guppy looks more like a Super Whale. The wide-body turboprop airplane has a cargo hold that's been built up into a bulbous shape, specifically to carry big stuff for outer space. Only five of the Guppies were ever produced, and they were used to cart spacecraft components around for the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and shuttle programs. This Super Guppy is the only one of its kind still flying, and this week's odyssey with the most important piece of the Full Fuselage Trainer is one of the highest-profile flights the plane has ever taken.

For decades, the plywood-built FFT sat in a building at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The crew compartment ??the part of the structure that was flown to Seattle today ? was outfitted with all the buttons, switches, cockpit displays and middeck lockers that the real shuttles had. None of those gadgets worked, but they helped the astronauts get familiar with the layout before they started handling the real controls. Astronauts could also practice how they'd get out of the shuttle in the event of a landing-strip emergency.

With the end of the space shuttle era, NASA's Johnson Space Center no longer needed the FFT, so the space agency decided to donate it for display. The Seattle museum made a play for one of the flown shuttles, and even built a shuttle-sized, 15,500-square-foot Space Gallery to display it in. But Seattle lost out to Florida, California, New York and the "other Washington" in the competition for Atlantis, Endeavour, Enterprise and Discovery. The Full Fuselage Trainer served as the consolation prize.

Most of the FFT's plywood parts could be shipped up by traditional means for later assembly, but the shuttle crew compartment had to be transported all in one piece. That's why NASA's Super Guppy was called into service.

The airplane has a 25-foot-high, 25-foot-wide, 111-foot-long cargo compartment ??big enough to hold the mockup's most awkward piece, even when it's bound up in shrink wrap and a protective steel frame. Over the past couple of days, the Super Guppy has been making a journey from its home at Ellington Air Force Base in Texas, over to California, and then up to Seattle at a top speed of around 200 knots. It wasn't exactly a record-setting pace ??but what the Super Guppy lacks in speed, it more than makes up for in the "What the Heck Is That?" department.

The Guppy flew over my hometown and its surroundings with a Seattle-born astronaut, Greg Johnson, at the controls. Then it floated down to a landing right in front of the museum, which is adjacent to Boeing Field. One of the commentators at the museum called it a "beautifully ugly airplane."

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire pointed to the craft with pride as the sky spit down rain. "When we get together in Washington state, we can land the big whale right behind me," she said.

After its touchdown at Seattle's Boeing Field, the turboprop-powered Super Guppy taxis over to the Museum of Flight next door.

The cargo compartment for the Full Fuselage Trainer, wrapped in protective plastic, has been taken out of the Super Guppy for a short ride on the Tunner transporter to its new home in the Museum of Flight's Charles Simonyi Space Gallery.

Several thousand onlookers watched as the Super Guppy's entire front opened up to the side like a four-story-high door.?

"It's really cool that it's actually able to fly," Allison Kirkman, a 10-year-old student at Spirit Ridge Elementary School in Bellevue, Wash., told me as she watched from the tarmac. "It's an amazing plane, and how they built it is cool, too."

The shrink-wrapped shuttle crew compartment was moved out of the wide-yawning Super Guppy onto a 65,000-pound mobile transporter, then rolled over to the museum's Charles Simonyi Space Gallery. Over the next couple of months, the shuttle mockup will be assembled in a place of honor, alongside a Russian Soyuz capsule and a prototype lander that was used in Blue Origin's spacecraft development program. Museumgoers like Kirkman will be able to walk through the shuttle mockup's cargo bay ??and they might even be able to crawl through the crew compartment, just like the astronauts did.

Kids, prepare to be amazed ... again.

Here we will list NPCs that become important characters to the story. This way you can get a little background on them even though they don't have their own character sheets. Be aware, however, their information will only update as you find out more about them. This includes their Pok?mon. These NPCs are too important for you to control without direct permission. Do NOT move them around as you please. This is true of most NPCs that are not listed here as well. Be sure to ask if it's okay to move a character or choose how they react if you are unsure.

Jessica Roth

Image

Age: 18
Starters:
-Pichu, Male
-Ghastly, Male

(Yes, she is special and gets two. You don't. Sorry!)

Jessica's parents are divorced, so both gave her a separate present as a reward for completing the Pok?mon Academy at the top of her class. Jessica is very intelligent, and very serious. She isn't necessarily mean, but at times she's comes off as a bit cold. She excels at most every field of Pok?mon, but is especially adept at battling, and has been described by her opponents as "vicious".

Jaime Collier

Image

Age: 23
Pokemon:

Jamie is the perfect stereotypical hick from Solaceon Town. Her accent is unmistakably country, her clothes somewhat rough and dirty, and her Pokemon perfectly match her upbringing. Jamie, however, is incredibly intelligent when it comes to Pokemon, as her aspiration in life is to become a renowned Pokemon Breeder.
